What lights to use??
« on: April 25, 2017, 07:17:24 PM »
Looking to put lights on my boat. I have a platform built that they will mount under. I want to use LEDs so that I can run them off a battery instead of a generator. Any suggestions would help. Trying to stay on the cheaper side of things, not looking to spend $100 a light. Thanks in advance.

That's what I have been looking at. Have you used these?

I have put some of these on my tractor. Amazing for plowing snow at nite. Have some extras I was going to mount on my Japanese quarter horse just haven't done it yet.

Leds are a great option! I used to run LEDs on batteries but if proved to be a real pain. Although deep cycle batteries are built for drawing down and bringing back up I found that they would only last about a season. Another issue that you will run into is when your voltage drops during the night, you may not notice them getting dimmer, but as your voltage drops your amps will increase. This can blow fuses and melt things down. I recommend finding a small generator. I still run 12 volt lights with a converter just because I want to be able to turn on the lights without a generator running. If you don't need or want that feature you may go with 110 LEDs. They are usually cheaper than the 12V models. As far a light quality....Ebay lights are good for the price, however they lack in lumens. Even though the specs look the same often the drivers and chips are sub par and produce less light. It's often hard to know until you get a lux meter on the light to see the real output. Lights from CustomFitz LEDs are top of the line. The price seems high but even compared to some other "bowfishing" LEDS they put out twice the lumens. There a lot of info here....if you want you can call me at 509-845-3685
