I'm real new with the homebrews but a lot depends on the camera you choose to use.  The better the camera the better the pictures. If you look at some of the pictures posted in the homebrew forum you will find some really high quality pictures.  The major cost of the homebrews is how much you pay for the camera you choose.  If you get a high quality camera on ebay for a bargin then you will cut your oveall costs.  The basic componets minus the camera are around $70.00, add to that the cost of what camera you buy and you have it.  Most of the high priced Trailcams on the market can run up to $500. + and be in the 5 megapixel range.  You can do a homebrew 12+ megapixel camera for probably $250.  depending again on what you pay for the camera.  All of the pictures , including flash can be real high quality with your homebrew.  You have to take in to account here that I just got into the homebrew trailcams and have just one  but I'm jazzed about it and it's really a lot of fun to check and see what went by while you were asleep  :)

Takes good photos at night with the flash.  When mine is in sleep mode it will sense motion, fire up and snap a photo in about 1.8 seconds.  It seems wicked fast to me.  I got my W9 cameras for $42 and $51...they went up a little bit when everyone was trying to build their first one.  I'm on my second one and should have it finished today.  I have a toital of $140 into my first one, should cost a little less on the next few.

Riley,  I think the homebrews are the ONLY way to go. If you ever build one, you won't like the other cameras that you mentioned.

Being a graduate of the BobR camera school that was put on here in Spokane earlier this year I can say that the person you need to ask lives close to you in Walla Walla. I do believe that Bob had mentioned he was going to do a camera build class there this spring. Maybe shoot him a pm and find out.
