« on: March 05, 2021, 05:48:08 PM »
Hey All,
Anyone have info on the closest area to Washington, where a fella might have success hunting wild hogs?

I think the closest huntable population of wild hogs is California.

Northern California has a solid population in some counties. There is some public hunting but the majority of the best area like most is leased up for hunting. It still can be done. Pig hunts are not to much money and can be a great time!

Not the closest, but Oklahoma is infested with them.

I’m also considering doing this. Not sold on a guided hunt over a feeder so I’m considering a DIY hunt also.

I thought there were a couple ranches in central Oregon that had wild hog operations going on.

Those are high fence hunts.  The only established population of wild hogs in Oregon is along the CA border in southwest.  I've yet to find any in the wild down there (I grew up there).   Oregon does allow hunting wild hogs with just a hunting license, no tags.  If you can find them.

I've also thought of hitting northern CA for wild hogs on public land.  Many end up on private land, and then are leased for outfitters.  But one of these years I'll find some on public land hopefully.  My buddy has a bacon business as a side gig, and we've always joked about making bacon out of some wild hogs one year.

The couple in Oregon are high fence hunts. Oregon made it illegal for anyone to charge for a wild pig hunt. There are a few(very few) wild pigs in central Oregon from what I’ve gathered but they’re not easy to find.

A lot of the guided hunts in cali are spot and stalk on ranches not so much over feeders. Some do have that style but not all. I have killed 3 spot and stalk style and 1 over bait.

Bring money, lots of it.  Gas and license will exceed $300 for one DIY hog and it will be tough

Not what your looking for but Typical: You can do Texas for $1/lb hanging weight plus air fare and car rental.  Free room and board if you use coupons or $399 for 2 nights if not.

Hunt over feeders.   They Discourag spot and stalk but we did as were only ones there that weekend.

Its not your typical hunt but fun.  Buddies used bows and another his pistol.

Have hunted California 4 times.  All guided and with different outfitters, I have never done it over feeders, all spot and stalk.  If you want more of a challenge (we did this all 4 times) hunt late February or early March, you will work for the hog.  Typically a 2 day fully guided hunt will cost you about $1,00 + or - .  It is a lot of fun.  If you go in the May/June/July time frame I think it is more like shooting fish in a barrel as they are out all day and you will have plenty of chances.

I am not aware of any solid public land, these things love cattle farms and they get leased up.  They are a lot of fun to hunt and really pretty inexpensive, if the drive wasn't so far I would go ever year to kill the hunting blues in traditionally non hunting months.
