Hunting Golden Retrievers
« on: September 23, 2022, 10:38:16 AM »
I am thinking about a golden as my next bird dog.  My current dog is a lab.  I just saw a litter announcement from Stonefly Retrievers in Ennis Montana.  Does anyone know anything about this breeder, or this breed in general?

My dog, Ruby, is a hunting golden from Skyriver in Ellensburg. She is a little one, only about 45 pounds. That said she is a great all around dog. She has a great nose and we kill a lot of chukars together. I have seen her on multiple occasions follow a running cripple 300+ yards and bring it back. She is also a great waterfowl dog and won't back down from a crippled goose despite her size. She is not as strong a swimmer as my dad's lab could be size, training or the breed. Even still she has picked up a 4 man limit, all on the water, all by herself.

What I like about Ruby over my dad's lab is she matches the energy level well. She is possessed when its time to hunting but has an off switch when its time to be a family dog. My wife and I are both office job folks so Ruby gets a lot of time alone.

She is a smart dog, not hard headed, her performance hunting is a product of that, not my training. She is my first dog and first go around training. I got the basics down and then tried to get her on as many birds as possible and let them teach her the rest. This will be her third season and I am confident she is between 200 and 300 birds on her lifetime. They taught and she paid attention.

She fills up with burrs like no ones business if they are around... And she sheds all day every day.

This is my experience with this dog, not saying all are the same. But I will definitely be getting a hunting golden again.

I don't know anything about that breeder but man I love goldens!  Had them growing up hunting pheasants in Pennsylvania.  On my second one now.  Current pup is from Lish Kennels in Idaho.  Non stop drive to get after birds of any kind.

KP-Skagit is spot with the burr attractant and shedding.  It's all part of the process.

As far as Ennis, MT the only thing I know is if you go try some Big Horn Bourbon - delicious stuff.

Had my Golden for 16 yrs, what a great dog. loved, loved upland hunting no bird would go unaccounted for. Waterfowl she could take it or leave it. She loved the water but not the cold water:) she would do it but I don't think she liked it very much. Now I'm on to my new hunting partner.

Golden retriever are good bird dogs & good dogs around the house. Get a good comb for the upland hunts & I think you’ll be happy with him/her

Thanks for all the info, including the tip on the bourbon.  I do enjoy a good bourbon!
I love this quote from Faulkner's "The Bear";
"There was always a bottle present.  so that it would seem to him that those fine fierce instants of heart and brain and courage and wiliness and speed were concentrated and distilled into that brown liquor which...only hunters drank, drinking not of the blood they spilled but some condensation of the wild immortal spirit, drinking it moderately, humbly even, not with the pagan's base and baseless hope of acquiring thereby the virtues of cunning and strength and speed but in salute the tem."
