How can I get a wolf in the area I am hunting
« on: November 12, 2022, 05:04:07 PM »
I am hunting W/T in Idaho and in just a few days of hunting I have come across 2 wolf kills of young w/t and this morning just as I was leaving my truck several were howling about 3 to 400 yards above my location. So I headed towards their location and found their track but they had gone silent. I have not hunted wolves before and would like to get one. Any wolf hunters out there who could give me any tips on how to get a chance at one. They have been in the same area for the last 3 days.

I am not a pro hunter but seen it done enough to know it’s possible. Best is to find a kill which it sounds you have done “ don’t know what’s left”  but camp out on it and shoot one off it. Other option is howling if they are pressured they will not come or go silent. If they haven’t been and you sound alright they can come in to check out who is in their area. Best if you can find a place with good lines of sight and good shot windows. Lastly pure luck bumping into them.

I’ve called several in while using a cow call for elk.

They also respond well to other canines so a “coyote”.

:yeah: Coyote and hound sounds can be effective.
All competition to them and they don’t like it. Early on hunting them in Idaho heard of guys using baying hound recordings on fox pros and killing them. Even more so in areas where guys were having hounds killed when running cats and bears.

I know guys who were archery hunting for elk in Idaho and were using cow calls......and several wolves showed up real quick. If you think they are close or in the general area, settle in with your back to a tree and start calling. If they are close, they will hear you.

Ok great! Thank you everyone. I have kind of lost interest in my deer hunt. Really exciting this morning with them howling so close. Never been around them and I am kind of hooked on trying to come up with one or two. 🐺

In September this happened to us in Montana to within 25 yards but no shot opportunity. A black one came from down wind but had sprayed elk piss with some cow calls so figured that covered our scent. A wolf hunter we talked to said ones he shot had deer in em so a deer call will work too. Excited to try again next week.
I have Man Chit to do
