Antenna to InReach Mini ???
« on: March 19, 2023, 10:35:06 PM »
Got to thinking about using a InReach Mini where there was not clear view of sky like in a remote cabin or tent.

Is there any hack that could be used to clip a auxiliary antenna to a Mini?

You electronic guys any solutions?

Mine works in a Alaknak tent.   Try on south facing window sill.
Can’t help beyond that.

I guess I should say, I don’t have a need now. I just got thinking about it for some reason and wondered if it could be done.  Sometimes in camp I touch a radio antenna and the reception improves.
There has been talk here about cell phones using your body for better reception.

So why couldn’t you use a antenna clipped to a Mini and improve  signal??

Raining today so have all the crazy stuff rolling around in my head. :bash:

You can also just put the inReach outside the tent/cabin since you are likely using your phone to actually send and receive messages.  I did this at one camp, there wasn't reception in my tent, but there was where my truck was parked so I just left it on the dash while I was in the tent.

Don’t own a smart phone.
I am sure there are work around, but could you clip a antenna to it and get it to work?

I can't imagine actually trying to type a message on a Mini directly without a phone. Assuming you just want to send a predefined message, leaving it outside a cabin or ten for 10 or 15 minutes should give it enough time to connect to satellites.

:yeah:

I use satellite texting alot, throw the mini outside. The Bluetooth range is plenty from phone to unit that it won't be a problem.

yeah i dont know about any antenna hacks. however everyone i talked to with the full size inreach says they work alot better then the minis. I have the mini and do not like it one bit. if your hunting the timber you better not need it cuz i texted my wife i killed a buck and might need help at noon and she didnt get the text till 6.

I don't think that's unique to the mini. One of the reasons I moved to a Zoleo.

That's for the overlander models with big screens, the backpacking versions don't have an antenna jack.

I've never had connection problems with mine, I can text back and forth with my wife with maybe a minute delay?  I've never not been able to get a signal either.  I have the old Delorme yellow one.
