Awesome bull can't wait for the story!
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

When I saw SELECTED for this tag I knew I was in for a ride! I started sending out the customary texts to all my hunting buddies telling what we did (mostly didn’t) draw. Turned out a buddy of mine that I have elk hunted with a few times pulled a cow tag for the same season and he had helped with a bull tag a few years back. He was good to take the whole season off and basically help me hunt bulls then go for his cow afterwards. Another buddy of mine wanted in as well, these guys are down for anything and good elk hunters so Elk Camp was looking set up for success!
The obsession was running strong at this point and I spent any spare time I had hiking, shooting, and looking at pictures of huge bulls figuring out how to field judge. I had never been on a hunt where I needed to know the difference between 350 and 380 let me tell you that is a good problem to have but also adds a self-imposed amount of stress! Jay Scott outdoors was an awesome resource for this check him out if you need to brush up on scoring bulls
I started planning out my scouting trips but man summer was busy with work, family stuff, etc but I was able to get 11 days in the unit pre-season. Honestly I needed another week or 10 days to see everything as it’s such a big unit and everything is a looong ways around to get to different areas. I put glass or touched foot in probably about 25% of it but between knowledge that passed to me from guys I know that have had the tag, guys on here that gave me some good nuggets, guys I met out scouting, and what I was seeing I felt like I was in a good enough spot to concentrate my efforts.

My cellular trail cams started out slow but I was glassing up some good bulls when I was in town so I kept my head up. When I made it in to check some of my traditional trail cams I had one that was getting some pretty good action, and had one potential shooter bull for me.

Side note: I think I was under judging most of the Big bulls, the big belly draggers like the 7 point I posted above have such big bodies and heads that the anatomical references are off… these guys are freaking tanks!

August 30th is when my infatuation started. I had been out checking trail cams and was a little upset with myself for losing track of time because I wasn’t going to be able to make it to my glassing knob before dark. There was about an hour of daylight left and I was still a couple miles from the wheeler so I was basically speed hiking to try and get 10-15minutes of glassing in. I heard a big growly bugle from down in the bottom of the canyon I was working around and went to the edge to see what he was. I could tell in my Binos from 650yards that I was looking at a Monster of a Bull. He worked up into the trees and the trail I was on goes right through that patch on the way back. I had to get a closer look so I booked it over there and spent 20-30 minutes right on the edge of his herd. He was FIRED up! He was glunking, screaming, raking trees hooking and chasing cows and patrolling his perimeter is was awesome. At one point he came within 50 yards of me I was in awe of this perfect 7x7 with a split brow and 3-4 inch inline sticker above his g4. I was able to get some handheld cell phone video of him and probably watched that footage 200 times over the next week. I’ll attach a couple screen shots from that video. I had found my primary target!
