Modern rifle bull tag Wenas/Observatory
« on: October 08, 2024, 04:06:45 PM »
I've been scouting for several weeks and have spoken to several deer hunters about elk in the Weans wilderness area--Bull tag in Weans/Observatory modern rifle.  With the dry hot conditions, the elk are hard to find.  I did find one bull in the lower Weans.  Anyone hunting deer, archery Elk, or black powder seen bull elk in the Weans wilderness area, please message me if you can.

Sorry, must of had the Norse Peak wilderness area my mind (original tag).  Wenas and Lt Murray are wildlife areas.

The year I had the tag I did not see one elk. We had a year with zero weather up high. We did see other tag holders that connected with bulls, we were just not fortunate. There are resident elk to hunt, but we got zero migration that year. Hope the weather turns out to be more cooperative for you! I'd love to try it again, as its a really good tag to have! Enjoy!
I felt like a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!

You have a big bull tag? We probagbly seen 3 6 points and a 5 point all from the rig going to our deer spots. They could of been the same bulls just different areas. During the rifle season they will be getting pushed around as there is alot of people in there.

May I ask where your were when you spotted them?  You can private message me.

I’m not sure where you’re scouting. But you did mention Wenas which is pretty open country. My suggestion is to get West in your available units. To the timber. I wouldn’t expect to see a whole lot of elk near wenas at this time of year due to weather. Once rifle deer and elk pressure kicks then around and maybe some snow eventually, one could expect to see them further east. But rt now it’s still plenty warm with minimal hunting pressure until rifle opens. You should have some luck sticking to the timber and in drainages that still have water in them, I hope this info isn’t redundant to you. Good luck! PS, a guy I used to work with had your tag a few years ago. He had pretty much lost all hope and ended up killing an absolute monster on the last day. Called him in on a bugle he told me. And I don’t think he’s much of a caller. Probably used a Terminator tube or something. So if you’re able, try doing locate bugles. They’re still plenty chatty out there coming out of the rut. Good luck!!!
