Setting boat trailer bunks
« on: February 15, 2025, 07:10:16 PM »
Anyone have any experience with setting up bunks on boat trailers?
Here's my issue. I have an older home built trailer that I'm refurbishing. The trailer was built for a boat manufactured by Lucraft back in the 70s that is similar to the Carolina skiff. It's a fiberglass skiff style boat with a heavy keel that's basically flat. I replaced all of the rollers down the center with as close as I could find to the same shape and sizes as the originals and when finished, the new rollers hold the boat up so that the boat isn't resting on the bunks.
Since it's obvious that I now have to adjust the bunks, my question is; when the boat is up against the bow stop, should the bunks be set at a height that has the boat resting on just the bunks meaning most of the weight is off of the rollers thus protecting the keel when the boat and trailer are bouncing down the road?

Yes, you want the weight of the boat on the bunks.  At least most of the weight on the bunks, some weight on the rollers is okay.  The idea is to spread the weight over a larger area.

Thank you, that's kinda what I'm shooting for. Considering the guy that built the trailer, built it net or to the boat with no adjustments available, I'll be replacing brackets and drill each one to transfer load to the bunks and remove some load from the rollers.
