Been huntin up in 560 out of TL during modern elk for 10 years, so I have a little knowledge of the NW corner of 578, bout it. 578 late was our 4th choice, just threw it in cuz my buddies dad got a nice 1 outta there 7 years ago w/ disabled hunter permit. big arse blackie.

Though I haven't archery hunted yet, I'm assuming there's a difference between seeing and actually getting to shoot  ;) If I can get all of 6'7" within range of any deer I'll be happy lol

Buckmania,
I also have the late buck West Klickitat tag, If you see a Tacoma silver four door stop by and say hello.  We did a lot of pre season scouting and found LOTS of does and some smaller bucks.  We are hoping to find some big boys now that the rut starts.  Unfortunately or Fortunately depending on how one looks at it we drew Siuoxon cow tags that run about the same time as our late buck so hopefully we can fill our cow tags quickly. Good luck We will be on the west end of the unit.  Unless we can't seem to find any good bucks then east we go.  I know of several late buck tags that go filled during the General season with some good bucks.  Question for people who have had this tag before.  Is it better to hunt up high in the snow or should I concentrate down where we are seeing all the doe and small bucks.  Will the big bucks come to the doe?  We saw around 20 doe last Tuesday on a scouting trip.
Thanks

This is my opinion: could be wrong. But this unit has a rut migration where the bucks will move down (or just show themselves, they might be around already) to where the does are come the rut. There are some great bucks down toward the Columbia and the Klickitat that aren't there strictly because of weather. Question for you, what do you mean by up high? Is there higher country on the west end of the unit? My experience is mostly all in the lower country and on the east end of the unit. Personally, I'd focus on the does, transition zones just above wintering areas, and stay mobile. Good luck.

Did not mean to Hijack Buckmainia thred but it all seams related. I am hunting North a few miles of conboy lake. I have been scouting about 2000ft to 2500 feet and we had been seeing lots of does  in that range when we went up to the 3000ft range the sign seemed to be almost non existand except for a few large buck tracks.  In the lower elevations we have not seen a lot of big buck sign and not any rubs. On the 27th we hunted below the snow and saw does and small forked bucks and spikes.  When we went up into the snow again almost no sign.  I am not after a small three point I have plenty of them and hopefully will have elk meat in the freezer.  I am hoping to tag a mature buck this year or go without which I am o.k with.  Thanks for the replys

Since its an any elk unit during MF I'll probably wander over that way a time or two, least the nw section anyway. Two birds with one stone possibly. I'll let ya know what we see.

Finally got the cow elk cut up Wednesday took a little longer than expected to fill the tags. Thursday we went to our original deer spot and there was about 150 head of elk and a equal number of hunters in the area we planned to hunt so we decided to check out back up area Friday. Friday turned out  to be one of the best deer hunts of my life.   We are hunting five miles behind a lock gate weather was great.  My hunting partner and I saw 52 deer 7 legal bucks and nine forks or smaller it was truely amazing.  I passed on on really large 3pt with eye guards that I may regret not pulling the trigger.  It was very tall and outside the ears but the was really only our second day of deer hunting and It had a broken G-2 from a recent fight.  This would have been the widest and tallest buck I had killed. Normally I am not a trophy hunter but with elk in the freezer and the number of oportunities I felt I can find this buck again if I can't find a bigger one.  Good luck everyone.  I am headed out Sunday through thursday to Hopefully bag a wallhanger.
