well the black lab is not birdy anymore she indeed did corner my uncles chickens and he yelled at her for it and since then she does not go anywhere near a bird , my yellow lab he is very birdie i have yet to take him out on a hunt , but retrieves anything even dead ducks , he was force fetched and some training but no where near what i paid for the trainer did not give me what i paid for her to do

Benbo, get him out in the field. Let him do what he does, I bet you will be surprised. I have never used a trainer, not that I won't just not in the checkbook right now, get that dog out and let his instincts work for you. Make your expectations a reflection of his training and you will not be disappointed. Good luck.

Pigeons are generally pretty cheap and there is no season. Clip the wings or tape them down so it can not fly while training and get your dog finding and retrieving them and move on from there. If youcan find an affordable source shoot a few every now and then for the dog to really enjoy the retrieve. Old Dog and I should have plenty of gamebirds for sale before next hunting season. Giving the dog another year off will not help him be ready when you are. I now all about tight money and I have a $300+ monthly bird food bill :yike:.

As long as shooting is legal you are fine. I am pretty sure you can use the release sites until like April or something. A good clear cut where you deer hunt should work just fine.
