west side unit on tigard mtn
« on: January 25, 2011, 10:17:53 AM »
I'm thinking bout going west side this year since I've always hunted east n wanting to go after bulls if I don't get drawn n my usual areas. I was wondering what unit tigard mtn is in, if u can hunt it, and how the area is for game. I always hunted east side. Also the towns of bothel and enumclaw since I got friends that live there what gmus they are in.

Not too much bowhunting opportunities in Bothell, and there's no elk there either.

Do you mean Tiger Mountain?
Never heard of Tigard Mt.

tough hunts, there are some animals, but most hang on private property.
I have seen some decent animals between Enumclaw and Greenwater, used to be more as you headed higher (towards Greenwater and White River) but between the "Natives" and locals, well you can see this conversation could head downhill fast...
I see Elk all the time along I-90 there by 18 near MP38, but if you are after a "trophy" you have your work cut out for you.
You also stated " I've always hunted east n wanting to go after bulls if I don't get drawn n my usual areas" are your usual areas on the west-side ? if not you have to stick with your tag, unless drawn for multi.

My usual areas is the rimrock, nile, lil naches units, ect whatever is open and close to home here n yakima. But I kinda want to try and hunt bulls and give it a whirle this year, put in for tags but gonna take years to get drawn n this area so I was just curious bout those areas that's all.

So if you buy a westside tag, you can only put in for westside hunts or ghost points. You can't put in for eastside hunts and hunt the westside...you're aware of that?

Didnt see it listed above, but Tiger Mt. is located in GMU 454. Right across I-90 to the North = 460

Its a great place for bow hunting due to the firearms restrictions IMO. Haven't seen any elk or sign in that area, but a ridiculous amount of bear signs. The area farther east towards N. Bend has some elk, but they tend to stick to private property as soon as the season opens up (pretty smart IMO, its like they know whats coming instinctively)
Theres plenty of room for all of gods animals.... right next to the mashed potatoes!

I've hunted Tiger a lot and have to say it there are much better places for deer, hiker's are all over the place for one. Bear are also all over the place, but your likely to hunt 20 days for a smallish doe, as far as deer go and that's if your lucky. As has been said, the private lands around are far more productive as that's where the browse is, Tiger is not clearcut really to any extent, not enough to provide adequate forage, it's more of a transition range for deer.

put in for the multi season Elk permit, If you draw you can hunt both sides and apply for permits on both sides.

Hunted the area the past three years in the firearm restricted areas W of HW18. Probably hunted a total of 20 days or so and never crossed an elk track. I was deer hunting though and wasnt looking for elk.

I've heard the I-90 corridor has better concentrations but I focus on elk elsewhere.

If you put in your time around Enumclaw/Buckely areas you can get into them, theres guys on this site that do but as a rule of thumb you are going to have to spend more time spent in the woods per elk encounter because there is more pricvate land out there than in most units. Unless you have access to private where there are elk that is!

There are some whopper bulls in 454 though there was a post on here a few years back of a huge Muzzy bull, I think it was top 3 state muzzy roosie all time, taken somewhere in 454.

If you want to hunt elk on the westside, you should try South Rainier, Packwood, Lewis River GMU's, since they are just over the other side of White Pass from where you live. Lots and lots of public land in those units and plenty of elk. Plenty of hunting pressure too, but that's the case anywhere there are good numbers of elk.
