inexpensive handgun

I currently only own an old .22 pistol that weighs a ton and would probably serve me better as a blunt force weapon then actually shooting something with it so I am thinking about buying new (to me) pistol. I am looking for something inexpensive and light but reliable. It will mostly be used to carry along with me while hunting as a safety measure.

Inexpensive is a pretty loose term, a Springfield XD compact in 45acp would be relatively light and very reliable.

Agreed, when I say inexpensive, I guess I mean like $400 and under.

All i got too say is get a revolver!! If its for protection! No jams and if the charge does not detonate just pull her again   and yes all i own pistol wise are rugers and like you said also a good blunt force weapon

Taurus makes some nice revolvers that fir that discription.  Buds guns online has 2 inch 327 federal for under $300 right now.  Barels a bit short for the woods but better than a rock.  i Picked up a sig p250 for under $400 a few weeks agoon gunbroker, take a look around there are soe good buys if you look.

Your looking for what I was looking in a pack gun, light , inexpensive and reliable. Here's what I bought.
Taurus 444 ultra-lite 44mag 28.3oz black model is super hard to find but you can get the SS model for around $570

Thanks guys, those are some good recommendations. I don't need anything special or something that will win me target shooting matches, just something light weight and reliable that I can carry with me camping and when bow hunting.

  they certainly aren't heavy at least they don't feel heavy on the hip. i don't know how big a guy he is i'm 6'1 230 so it's not heavy to me but for $400 one can't be to choosy

I pack a blackhawk 357 with a 6 1/2 inch barrel seems light to me

I am 6'1" and about 180 lbs so it doesn't have to be light as a feather, just prefer it not to be a brick. Since I plan on taking it with me backpacking as well, that is why I want something on the lighter side.
