?? for super telephoto users
« on: November 01, 2011, 05:42:46 PM »
Gonna be getting a lense set up to shoot elk with this winter. Im gonna be shooting from a long ways away 3-500 yards.  I am thinking about going with Sigma 800mm f/5.6 with a 1.4x extender.  My question is if any of you have any experience with shooting wildlife with this lense; and if that setup would be apropriate for that distance...any advice or experience will help make my decision since I have never shot at that distance before.

I have the Sigma 500mm and have used the 1.4 extender with it and was not terribly happy with the image degradation. That said, I love my lens capability at just base focal length and at 800mm, you should be in good shape, for the money you might want to also consider the Nikon 200-400mm with the Nikon 2.0 extender, I know photographer's who use that setup for western big game who take absolutely phenomenal photo's.

I shoot a Canon body and will be renting the lense set up before I consider buying any of them. My main concern is what lense setup will be the best for out at that distance. The largest I have used is the 100-400mm and wasnt shooting near that distance.  thanks for the input.
