Need a recommendation.....
« on: August 04, 2008, 05:57:48 PM »
Hello All,

I have a buddy that I have been trying to get into elk hunting for the last several years.  I normally hunt in Idaho, and will be doing so again this year, so I don't know much about Washington.

What I am looking for is a good place to go camp where we could listen to the elk bugle once the rut begins.  Each year he says he is going with me when I go over to scout in Idaho, but something always comes up.  I really want to get him out there and see just how amazing it is to listen to them.  I am hoping he gets the rush the way I do.  If not, no big deal.

Anybody willing to point me in the right direction where we could go camp, do some hiking, and listen and/or watch bulls during the rut.  Any place that won't have any hunts going on at the same time.  Not looking to step on any turf during that time.  We all wait all year to hunt and I would hate to get in someone's way...just want to get outdoors, smell the fresh air, and have some fun.

Thanks guys....trying to build a hunting buddy here.

Any of the Eastern Washington units after the archery season is good.  Have been over there my self at that time before october first and it is awesome hearing that sound.  I don't do it anymore unless I draw a tag!!   :chuckle:

Thanks SuperDave....I try not to do it too much.  If I do I would probably work on becoming and archery hunter, and I am not ready to spend more money than I already do :)

Go up to Blewett pass and see if they are singing.  Sometimes they start around the first of September, before the archery seasons start.

There is a herd in the open space between Snoqualmie and North Bend.  Last year during the rut, I was able to watch over 80 elk in the meadow.  Got to listen to the bugles, called a few calves over with a cow call, and even got to watch a spike try to mount a cow just before the rut started.  Pretty entertaining and right off the paved road.  Definitely gets the blood going for the season.
