Tight Barrel After Copper Bullets?
« on: May 05, 2012, 11:43:10 AM »
Have changed from Accubonds to Barnes TSX and am doing a light cleaning between test loads just to minimize variables.  I would do similar with the Accubonds and never noticed anything weird, but after shooting 5 TSX loads I can hardly shove the jag w/ patch through the barrel.  I finally had to drop down to the 6mm cleaning jag so I didn't bust my cleaning rod trying to force it through.

Barnes talks about reduced copper fouling in their copper bullet design, but it would seem to me that I'm getting more fouling since I can hardly get the jag through the barrel after shooting the copper bullets?

Any ideas or suggestions... anybody experience the same thing?

Thanks!

I think when they talk about reduced copper fowling they are talking about it being reduced compared to their old bullets without the grooves.  You might want to try some copper removing solvent. :twocents:

Get you the best copper solvent you can find... just do not let it set on your stock finish... bad juju there....   :bash: :bash:

I shoot Barnes out of all of my rifles with very little fouling.  Is your bore rough?  I fire lapped one rifle that had a rough bore and fouled very badly.

I use Barnes CR10 solvent.

Do the right thing, go back to the Accubonds. Don't fix it, if it isn't broke. ;)

My experience, is that there is no way to avoid this with Barnes bullets. Since its an all copper bullet, after the bullet is carved by the rifleing, it still leaves a copper trail all the way out as its pure copper and does not have a jacket.

Comparitively, a lead bullet with just a copper jacket does not leave as much. As I heard it explained to me: as the rifeling carved into the bullet penetrates through the jacket to the lead... it leave less copper fouling than a Barnes which is copper all the way from the outside in.

I personally have found Barnes bullets to be AWESOME.. I love em, BUT, I also know when sighting in with them, that they are going to leave more fouling and cause a little more work to clean the barrel than another bullet.

I have NOT expereinced a tighter barrel. But with enough rounds, I would not doubt it.

To get out the copper use a solvent as others have said. Personally, I like Butches Bore Shine because it is not corrosive and I can leave it in the barrel all night to do its work. Even still, sometimes that does not do it entirely, and a brass brush in needed coated in solvent to loosen it up.

Best of luck!

All I shoot is Barnes. They are terrific.  I use Wipe Out foam bore cleaner.  Gets them all shiny clean with just the use of a few patches.
I have heard of some folks using this stuff with a pre-foam application of a powder solvent, but I haven't seen the need.

As far as the tight barrel goes, I had that exact problem with a brand new rifle.  Same solution.  Smaller jag.  After a bunch of cursing I took that thing to a gunsmith who promptly condemned the barrel.  It wasn't finished properly.  Full of burrs. Never should have left the factory.  They made it right, however.

Good Luck
