SD Card question......
« on: May 18, 2009, 08:15:10 AM »
this weekend while changing SD cards in our cam for a little while we had a little problem being able to view the pics on my non-trailcam camera...
after some investigation it seems that our cam puts each set of pics into a different folder on the card..... :dunno:
Are those folders needed to see the pics?
I was a little confused as well, but i was just wondering if anyone had any similar problems.

Your best bet may be to buy a card reader rather than your camera. I noticed with my kodak camera it will not open any of the files, but with my canon I can view all of the pics taken. I am sure it has something to do with formating.

that makes sense...
tell me more if you can...
what we were doing was taking test pics and then looking at them on my camera and then putting it back in the trail cam. so what im understanding is that going back and forth from trail cam to camera is not a good idea.   :dunno:

SD cards are formatted to work in your camera....a new card has to be formatted to the camera. there's a thread on here somewhere on this topic with more info, but the end result was that sometimes you can view trail cam pics on a digital camera and sometimes you can't. when i put my trail cam sd card into my fz18 digital camera, the pics pop right up no  problem. such is not the case all the time. i think you are running a risk of one of the cameras deciding to reformat the card and losing whatever pics used to be there.

good point...thanks...
i think bringing an SD test card along is an option.
then we wont be playing with the actual card.
that makes sense...

Everytme you re-insert the sd card it creates a new folder, so if you don't delete the first you will probably confuse the hand held camera and it will not be able to open the files in multiple folders. At least that is how my trail cam works. It shouldn't hurt anything it will just get to a point where your hand held will not be able to open the folders. If you just keep taking pics and re-setting your camera you will be able to use just the laser to set it up in no time. To eliminate all of the trouble with test pictures try setting it closer to home so you can go change cards in the middle of the week until you get good at aiming it. I did a lot of tasting in my yard with my dogs as targets, before I set them out. I got some really good shots of my lab digging in the flower bed!! Plus my first three sets to figure out the aiming on wild animals was only a 10 minute drive and 30 min hike, so I was able to go out and check every 3 days or so.

I went to target and bought a card reader for $15. It will read something like 50 differnt formats. Works great.
