Scope mounting
« on: June 30, 2012, 08:10:50 PM »
Well I sent my scope in to Leoupold to have the CDS system/dial installed.  It should be back in about a week.  I was thinking of going an extra step when I install it, and do more than just slap it on and site it in.  I was thinking of buying the mounting kit of which I only really need the lapping tool and levels.  Price tag was about 100 bucks at Cabelas.  Any suggestions since I dont want to spend that for something I probably will only use once or twice.

You do not need all that.  Get you a 1" piece of pipe or solid stock about 18" long.  Use that to make sure everything is straight and aligned with each other.

I am assuming you have a cleaning cradle or some type of cradle to put the gun in when mounting the scope and making sure the crosshairs are vertical and horizontal.  Get a 2.00 string level to set on top of the scope if you are really that worried about it being perfectly level...

You spend 10.00 instead of 100.00.  I am a trained gunsmith, mounted hundreds of scopes.. I lapped a total of 2 sets of rings.  The guy shot 1000 yard competition.

You can also get a set of Burris rings with the floating centers for mounting if you really need that ...
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

I was thinking lapping the rings might not be a bad idea since the top ring halves are now likely mixed up.  I took them off and set them on the dining room table how they came off the scope.  Wife thought she pick them up and put them in a ziploc bag.  So now I dont know which is which  :bash:

1 inch pipe or dowel might be a bit sloppy for 30mm rings.....what say Huntbear ???????????  30mm converts to 1.18 inches.   :dunno:
