Sekiu help

 I am going on my first trip to sekiu in a couple days (7/5-7/7) and hope that some vets on here can throw some info my direction on how and where to fish. I am taking my boat which has not seen a salmon yet and I really want to bloody the deck and not have another fishless trip. Thanks, Matt

Are you salmon fishing? I have fished that area for decades. If you are I can give you some tips. If you are sea bass fishing or ling fishing I can give you tips for that also. Do you know where you are staying yet.

I have not fished for seabass before either. I would not mind giving that a go. Any info would be a big help.

Go around the corner from Sekiu headed west and fish that coastline back and forth for a few miles. As soon as you round the corner that is called "The Caves" area and at first light is good for Kings. There will be plenty of boats to show you where the fish are but that is a good place to start. There are some pretty basic things that you can do. First off I would fish at the very first light. Do you have down riggers? if you do you should start out shallow and then work them deeper as the morning wears on. You can pull flasher with herring behind or a lot of the locals use black and white Coyote spoons. If you are using more than one down rigger I would run different depths until you figure out where they are.

You can fish right out front of Sekiu and to the left for about the first mile of shoreline in around 125' of depth of water to start with. The Sekiu caves area has been a very productive area. Typically close in is better than far out for Kings. Also if you run across the bay towards the buoy and along that shoreline drop your lines in by the buoy and troll east. You will find that the bottom drops very deep close to the shore once you get across and along the cliffs. Once again stay close to the shoreline for kings.

Once you get started the crowds will give you a clear idea where to fish. I love it up there before salmon season when it is less crowded, but I do salmon fish and have taken many people up there and have caught lots of fish. This early in the season, the coho are typically very small but you can get some nice kings.

Thank you Woodman for the help. I have three other people going and none have fished up there so we are a boat full or rookies with high hopes...lol. I have two downriggers and will be running stackers to fish four lines. I stocked up on cookies and cream spoons along with green glow because thats what the guy at wholesale sports said to use. Also taking a bunch of green lable herring. I am excited to get up there and put some lines in the water. I have had a hell of a week if you look at the lost,found and stolen forum. Almost could not afford to go due to an *censored* trying to break into my house. Again, thanks for the info. Matt

Sometimes up there it can get pretty darn foggy, typically a little later in the year. I would not go there without a compass for sure. If you have a gps that is better because you also can track where you had bites or fish on. If the weather is clear no problem, if it is not clear and becomes thick a depth finder also helps so you can tell how far you are from shore.

I have a Lowrance HDS-7 and is pretty detailed. I am set up for it but I am not sure what my boat can take. I am new to boating and I have a 20' 2011 thunder jet luxor with an outboard. I have not had it in "big" water. I have only taken it out in the sound. It does not draft for *censored* and I feel every wave there. When you look at swell and wind waves, when would you call it quits? I have been watching the weather report and have not seen winds over 10-15 out of the north. I think I should be good.

You never really have to fish far from the docks up there if you don't want to and still catch fish. I mean you are only minutes away. Trust your gut and you will do fine.

Be prepared to be stopped by fish and game there also. Make sure you have pinched barbs and all of your safety equipment.

There are tons of silvers now which was a little surprising. 4-6 pounders. Some kings, I ended up keeping 3 but since they have to be clipped the ones I kept were small 8-10lbs, If you want fish and don't know the area just follow the fleet. You don't have to go far which is one of the beauty's of Sekiu.

Any of you guys that fish Sekiu or Neah Bay alot in the summer, I own the storage facility as you come into Clallam Bay and we store lots of boats in the summer. $50 a month and you dont have  to tow it back and forth to home. Includes washdown area so you can clean it up before you park it and its inside a fenced area with cameras and coded entry gate. Pm me for my cell number if interested. nwhunter

What accomodations would that be? I know in Sekiu some are pretty run down, but there are some very nice ones also.

I stay at the cape in Neah. They have great cabins for $100 a night (new this year) and camping spots are clean and well kept. The owner Gordy is a great guy he does a good job keeping everything comfortable. The docks in Neah are also much better, Sekiu docks are downright scary, mainly Olsons but Curlys and Van Ripers aren't much better and have little protection. The Coho used to be pretty nice but they screwed it up too now with the new owners. The store in Neah bay has everything you need except beer and booze. Only negative about Neah is its on the Rez so that of course has plenty of drawbacks, noise and cooler raiding to name just a couple. Fish is much more consistent in Neah too, if you have a sea worthy boat.

after you get your salmon run to neah bay for your seabass, that way you can catch 10 and you get 2 lings and 2 cabezon, fish around sail and seal rock for lings and cabezon and duck in behind wahda island on the west side by the garbage dump and catch you seabass, if you catch any great big seabass you could turn those loose and just keep the ones between 2 to 4 lbs. there is good ling fishn back there to and if you go straight out from the dump to about 200 ft there is good cod fishn as well, and i am talkn some big ass cod... good luck

Limit is 6 rockfish east of the Bonilla Tatoosh line must be black or blue 3 at Sekiu saw some guys get busted for having yellowtail and being over limit. So if you are actively fishing you can only have the limit For The Area You Are In. If running through, ok, but don't stop to fish in area 5 withan area 4 limit. Best of Luck!

For kings, if you see bait in the morning in an area, stay there and fish it.  For some reason we've never really had that much luck fishing out in front of the caves in Sekiu on the left side.  We've had more success fishing out in front of the buoy on the right when you're heading out from the docks in 130-160 feet.  Like some others said, it seems like the silvers are out there thick from reports, go out in the 400-500 ft  water shipping lanes area where you'll see other boats and fish the area for the silvers after the morning bite for kings.

Thanks for all the info. I had a great trip with lots of action. We got there around noon on Thursday and was on the water by 130. Got out to 130 feet of water and rods were dancing. We caught a lot of fish but most were native or too small. We ended up keeping 3 the first afternoon. On the water at 445 Friday morning. I dropped the cable down to 25 feet and that lasted 15 seconds before my reel was screaming. Lost that fish at the boat. There were 4 of us in the boat and could not get all the rods in the water. Had doubles and triples with non stop action till about 6 am. Ended up keeping 5 that day. It got pretty rough towards mid day and we decided to head in. Went back out that evening with no luck. Saturday morning was a repeat of Friday but limited the boat with 8 fish by 845. We kept a few nice kings for the trip but mainly had silvers in the box. We never made it far from the marina the entire trip. It was a lot of fun and I cant wait to make another trip back there.

Congrats sounds like a good time, glad you had a successful trip. How big were the silvers averaging? I'm headed to neah in a couple days
