We hunted today and I am amazed how relaxed she is around the gun. She is very relaxed sitting in the bush waiting for birds.
A few pintail came in and I winged one. It sailed into. The foot high barley. They are never where you think they are.
Pearl did not see it fall so I took her to the edge of barley and said hunt it up.
Up till now this has been a bumper now the reL thing.

She sailed off crisscrossing 40 ft from me back and forth. Than she sailed down wind and I saw the breaks lock up.

Her nose went up and she followed the scent 100 ft to my right. I love it when a duck try's to run from a dog. One pounce, two and she landed on it.

She looked at me and I said here.
At that very moment all the lights came on, she scooped up the live bird an raced to me with it.
A  waterfowl dog was born I. That moment. And a years worth of training was rewarded.
We played with the duck a bit than back to our hide hole. She pounce on her seat turned planted her butt and locked out on the decoys.
As I sat down next to her she glanced at me and her eyes said.
Let's do that again.

My only regret is that I did not start hunting with a dog until my late 40s. It's so much fun.

Ghosthunter,

Great story. I could feel the chest swelling pride as you watched your dog "GET IT."
Nothing like watching dogs figure things out and do the thing they're bred for.

Hoping to see some of that the next two days.

It is rewarding because I trained her myself. And sure I am not a trainer so there is always some little glitch. My first dog I trained and met with a trainer couple times a month to get birds shot etc.
This time it all on me and that's what makes it real fun.

But as far as good manners hunting she is way ahead of the game. I am kind of a no nonsense guy with obedience.
More birds takes care of a lot of issues.

Thanks

Thanks
But we are just getting started. I got to say she is way easier to train than my first one. She seems to know the game. And she relaxes a lot faster than my first which I really like on the slow duck days.
This  photo was taken December 21,2013 She is about 15 months. She had just retreived a Bufflehead across the pond. The only bird this day.

No ducks today but a good training session on boat ethics and using the ramp coming back.

 You must have been hunting Clear or beaver lake?

I wouldnt call it hunting. :chuckle:

I slept in till 7 am ,Took two hours to get my boat set up for the first time this year.
11 am had dekes in the water knowing there would be no birds. Relaxed for a couple hours. Than threw marks for the dog, with gun fire. Ramp practice.
2 pm picked up and went home.

Great Day :IBCOOL:

Beaver lake has been slow this year.
