Whitcomb Unit
« on: July 17, 2012, 09:20:15 PM »
So I got the Antlerless deer tag for the Whitcomb unit. Super excited about it because it sounds like a good place. Have never been there and trying to get a sense of where it even is.

Has anyone ever hunted this area? What is access like? Some descriptions call it an island, so I wonder if a boat is needed.

Would like to drive down on Sunday morning to check it out but didn't know what I was getting myself into.

Feel free to PM me as well. I don't want honey holes just have no idea what this unit is like (desert, mountain, etc.).

That is really interesting. Sounds like a cool area. Excited to have a raffle tag my first year out. It's only a doe but something is something. Heading down on Sunday to check out the area and see what kind of deer are around.

Appreciate the information. At least I can leave the Speedo at home.

Hey 92, does the Whitcomb unit include Crow Butte island, because that sounds like the island you're describing.  If my memory serves me correctly, Whitcomb island proper, is damn near flat as a pancake.

doesn't include crow butte. Biggest hill is a sand dune. I suppose you could glass it from across the road.

I hunted that area 3 yrs ago.Lot of deer it is a morning and just before dark hunt.I camped at crow butte and then drove to the island each morning and night.
If I was going to hunt it again I would hunt on the west end of the island in the sand dunes set up a blind and be in the blind 2 hours before dark the deer start to fillter out of the cotonwoods about 30 minutes before dark.In the morning I would be on the south side of the island the deer are of of the field by daylight but they hang out by the edge for a short time before going into the heavy brush. You should be able to shoot a doe with no problem. The yr I was there there where 6 of the 7 tags there when I was and every deer go killed in 3 days.but be prepared to get the deer to a cooler quitly because it is really warm. Some of crow butte is in the area but I dident hunt it.there is a road that goes into the main hunt area that is about 3 miles east of crow butte park.I hope this helps you it should be a great hunt.If I can be of any more help just ask.
