Thimbleberry
« on: July 07, 2012, 10:59:55 AM »
Hi,

I'm completely new to the black bear scene, but I'm going to try as a starter with the fall hunt in Whatcom county. My question is...do they eat thimbleberry? Everyone has been telling me to find the plentiful blackberries down lower, but sadly, I just can't happen to find them. However, there are loads of thimbleberry and I have not read anywhere whether or not the bears will go for these. Anyone have any experience or knowledge about that?

Thanks.

bears eat all berries, so salmon, thimble, back, blue, huckle, oregon grape, salal, those black ones on trees the name escapes me, logan, and possibly even hawthorn berries, also wild cherries....

i would think if youre seeing bear sign in the area and those are the only berries around or the largest amount of berries in the area that would be a good place to keep an eye on

Up your way you want to hit the Blueberry fields. Also look for blackberry and huckleberry.

I hunt that area, and have found that most of the bear I have taken this time of year (early August)down low have been eating huckleberry's which have been ripe for the past few weeks. They are opportunistic animals but if a bear finds a good huckleberry patch, he will keep coming back time after time. Get a high vantage point on an overgrown clearcut that holds a good amount of huckleberry's and that will give you a good staring point.
