Taking the boys to westport - pic's added
« on: July 18, 2012, 02:39:27 PM »
Taking my two boys (10 & 8Yrs. old) to westport this Sunday and Monday 7/22 -23. This will be their first trip salmon fishing. Both have trout fished with me since they were 2-3yrs. old. But never fished for salmon, needless to say they haven't slept for a week, they are way to excited.

I have been searching the fishing reports on here and on several links that have been provided, Thanks to all who have contributed, and good information.

Just throwing this topic out there to get more feed back from all of you as to what the weather/winds/swells and catch sizes will be this coming Sunday/Monday. Anyone have a crystal ball or want to go on record?

Thanks!

As far as fishing, the reports I have heard of have been fair, and pretty good fishing out at the 200ft line.

As far as weather, its pretty early to tell, currently NOAA shows it a little windy sunday but not bad and a short swell. According to my tide app max ebb is at 7AM sunday so thats something you're gonna wanna think about. Either wake up well before dawn and beat the tide or sleep in and wait for it, not sure how big of a boat you're in either, you'll know more when it gets closer.

Thanks for the update Sirmissalot,
Hoping for a calm day, want the boys to have memories of the fishing, not the chummin.

Here is an update from the charters that will give you an idea of how fishing is.

How big of boat are you in? I trust NOAA forecasts a lot more than magic seaweed. Noaa is still saying a little windy but a fairly short swell, 8-9ft combined seas though with the forecasted wind. That would be right on the edge for me, still fishable though. Keep an eye on it hopefully it improves a little

Sirmissalot is right to watch the tides.  Pretty significant ebb tides those mornings, with lows around 9am and 10am.  An outgoing tide rammed against an incoming swell makes for a nasty bar crossing.  Depending on your boat, I'd wait to cross until after the tide change, particularly with newbies.   :twocents:

On facebook the charter boat slammer has pictures of his trip each day with numbers of fish and fisherman but it;s closed to salmon friday and saturday so he will just have bottom fish pictures those days. Also the tuna fishing has been great and some sport boats have done well on them.

22' Trophy - Going with a co-worker. Trusted skipper. Should leave dock around 5:00Am.

  Thanks everyone for you're insight!

Hopfully I can post up some success pic's next week! Looking forward to putting some big smiles on the boys faces. They were sent to bed at 9:00Pm last night, I got up around 11:00Pm and heard them talking to each other through the walls about going fishing, the fish stories were getting pretty big.  :chuckle: Wish I had recorded their conversation, because evidently they are experts, Who knew?

Would not hurt to give them a bonine before going out. Might make them a little sleepy but better than a seasick boy.

How old are these boys?

What really helps is to have a beer/pizza bing the night before. The trip over the bar will really tell you what they are made of.

Kidding of course. Better safe than sorry with the pill suggestion. Once you are out there if they turn green your only options are to have 'em suck it up and push through or head back to dock.

Sunday is looking great, hopefully mondays forecast improves for you.

I heard a report from the other day, sounded like pretty steady action out in the deep water, straight out in about 250ft. Kings and silvers both, I think you guys will have a good time I wish I was going.

Got back late last night, ended up only fishing on Sunday played around on Monday - Sunday was great, little choppy over the bar but fine after that. Fished straight out at 275' to 300' kings between 180-200' deep, Cohos @ around 100'-125" deep. Just like the reports said! Thanks.

Boy's had a fantastic time! very excited. Put 7 in the box, 4 king's and 3 Coho. let a dozen or so back, action was fairly good all day. All were small, nothing over 12Lbs. but the boy's thought they were giants! and they will eat just the same! looking forward to smoking some up this weekend.

Gave each boy 1/2 a dramamine, 8Yr. old was just fine all day, 10Yr. old went over the side a few times in the morning then got his sea legs around 10:00Am and was fine the rest of the day. Helped to be on fish all day, kept his mind off of the motion  :chuckle: Very proud of both of them!

I'll post some Pictures up when I get a chance. Thanks again for all the updates and input.
