Bumping River Mtn Goat
« on: July 09, 2012, 09:52:25 PM »
I drew the Bumping River Goat tag this year! The last couple of weeks I've been scouring over maps of the area and talked to the local biologist. I took my 1st drive up into the unit last weekend and looked over the northern boundary of the unit off of Chinook Pass. I'm hoping to make my 1st backpacking trip into the unit this coming weekend from the southern edge of the unit off of White Pass. Haven't decided exactly where I want to go yet but if anyone has any advice I've got open ears.

I've heard that the southern portion of Nelson Ridge around Bismarck Peak holds the largest concentration of goats. And goats can also be found around Timberwolf Mtn, Russell Ridge & Bootjack, Cash Praire to Burnt Mtn, and Little Cougar & American Lake. Does this sound correct to all you that are more familiar with the area?

Any advice to good access trails for a particular area, areas to avoid, ect is appreciated.

We were up there scouting for elk a couple weeks ago and saw 18 different goats. Most around cash prairie and a few around bootjack. Good luck.

Lots of goats in the area. your best bet if you want a good feel for the area, go up to timberwolf with your spotting scope and look over all the peaks.  I always see goats on the peaks off of 1800 and 1808.

I have seen goats at Timberwolf, Cash Prairie, and if you go out the wilderness trail at the end of the road to Cash Prairie a couple miles I have seen goats on the backside of some of the ridges looking back towards the Prairie. Another tip  I noticed when I last hunted archery elk in the Bumping that both the goat tag holders ended up coming by camp at one time or another and asking if I had seen any goats in my hunting/scouting. That can be a good way to track some nice ones down.
Good luck on your scouting and hunt.

I saw a goat smack in the middle of the WOD wilderness in the dark timber before.  Surprised the heck out of me.  I have also seen many goats on the PCT heading south from chinook pass.  They were on the hills before you get to Dewey Lake.  Many stand on 410 at chinook pass and look through spotters at the goats.

Congrats on the tag!  I'm jealous... I can't wait to go goat hunting.  I know next to nothing about the unit so the best advice I can give you is to study these:

Be sure you know the difference between a nanny and billy before you go out hunting!

It was really nice meeting you up there I hope your wife made it out ok (she twisted her ankle 6 miles in)  We didnt get a whole lot of sleep at the lake that night the dog keep telling us of the elk that kept coming in all night to drink.  The fishing though that evening was awesome I'll give you one guess what the hot fly was.
