seen my first 2 of the season
« on: August 03, 2012, 08:00:07 PM »
Went out in the skok tonight and seen a good size bear up on a distant hillside about 200 yards while driving around the mountains. I had my rifle and bow in the truck and decided this bear would get an arrow if I could close the distance. I could have easily killed this bear with my rifle but I'm glad I didn't make that decision. About 2 minutes after starting my stalk (10 minutes of watching the bear beforehand) a little cub pops out of the grass.
I'm sure glad I didn't just grab the rifle and take the shot when I first seen it.

I guess this is the yearly warning to make sure you guys take the time to look for the little guys

Very cool.  I had the same thing last season.  I just bowhunt but had a sow and two cubs come out 75 yards behind her.  They are the coolest looking things when they are little

My buddy and I started bear hunting this spring in MT and saw 3 sows with 2 cubs a piece before we found one with out. Id say the high light of our ventures was watching two newly born cubs chasing each other up a hill and then wrestling and rolling down the hill tied up in a ball. Cute little buggers. We saw another set climb up in a tree while mama checked us out. The bear we ended up getting we watched for 2 hours just to make sure she didnt have cubs after seeing the previous ones. She ended up being an 8 y/o dry sow, it was a great hunt. Ill never forget those cubs >10 lb cubs.

They are fun to watch. I saw a mamma and two cubs last Thursday while scouting and a mamma and two cubs tonight, same general area but a ways apart. I bumped them while scouting and mamma ran away while the cubs climbed two seperate trees. She was huffing and popping her jaw until they finally climbed back down and reunited with her. Not sure if it was out of rare coincidence or what but the bears I saw tonight, came in while I was cow calling. I've had some luck in the past mimicing a lost calf but I have always heard sows with cubs usually shy away from calls. Same kind of deal, they were in an overgrown clearcut and were very hard to see. Mamma was hard enough to see at times. +1 on the reminder of being sure of your target. Good post.

I called in multiple sows with cubs last season. Again I always made sure to wait a few minutes before even thinking about grabbing my gun. As much as I want to kill my first bear I would hate myself for killing a bear only to watch little cubs sitting next to their dead mama.
That happened to my uncle a few years back.  :bdid:

In my experience a sow that has cubs will often come to a call way more aggressive than a boar.
