spike Elk
« on: August 07, 2012, 08:11:02 PM »
:dunno:If I'm hunting in a spike area, can i shoot a true spike or does it have to have that 1 inch branch on one side? I really want to make sure i follow the rules. It might be stupid, but i've been told the question not asked is the stupid one!! :yeah:
I'm a huntress.

• If it is a Spike Only GMU only one antler needs to be a spike. Thus a 1x1, 1x2, or 1x3 would all be legal for you to shoot: "Elk taken in these units must have at least one antler with no branches originating more than four inches above where the antler attaches to the skull."

• If the GMU is a "True Spike Only" you may only harvest a 1x1 Spike Bull; and NO OTHER: "Bull Elk taken in these units must have both antlers with no branches originating more than four inches above where the antler attaches to the skull."

See page 45 in this years Big Game Regs.

If an elk's antler is broken on one side, effectively turning it into a spike, does that make a legal bull in a spike only GMU?  :dunno:

Depends if you are in a true spike unit or not. Pretty easy to find out in the regs

I will add another dumb question does this mean it could be 1x7?  "• If it is a Spike Only GMU only one antler needs to be a spike. Yes. There was just a thread about this.  :chuckle:

I've actually seen a 1x6 harvested.
The ruling is exactly as stated in the regs. Everyone tries to overthink it.

:bash:So i can shoot a true spike in a spike area?? Or it has to be a 1x2 1x3 only no true spike. I'm thinking lesser branches is okay or not?

Yes. If you are in a general spike area, you can shoot a 'true spike'.
One shot, one Deer. Two shots, maybe one Deer. Three shots, no Deer
