Fresh cougar kill=lack of pics?

I moved a cam into an area that I got tons of pics in last dec-jan.  obviously different times of year will dictate where deer are but after 3 weeks I had 5 pix.  Pretty disappointing considering the same set up got 400+ pics in 3 weeks a mile away.  On my way out I came across fresh cougar kill 50-60 yards from my set up. Any chance I got a cat pushing the deer out or the deer just aren't hanging in the area?

I would guess that the cat has pushed the deer out of the area.
