Yeti Coolers - worth the $$$?
« on: August 10, 2012, 10:17:24 AM »
I'm looking for a new cooler for fish, crab, game, etc.  The Yeti ones seem real well made but they're pretty expensive.  Maybe a little heavy too.

Anyone have one?  Do you like it?  How long does it keep ice?

I have a buddy that has one on his boat and he says it can sit out on the back of his boat in the sun for 7 days and still have ice left in it at the end of his trip.   They are expensive but I don't think you would ever need another cooler.  There are a couple other company's with similar concept but have not heard much about them. ( grizzly, engel)

Do a search on the internet on cooler review.  I think YouTube showed a review of many diiferent coolers.  I do remember that Yeti did not get the best for the buck...

I have two Yeti coolers.  An oversize and a smaller one.  Last season I took the larger one to elk camp.  Put block ice in it along with the camp food.  12 days later when I got home from camp I still had ice.  They are worth the money if you need long term cold storage in a camp.  I was a bit paranoid about someone liking it more than me.   I did chain it up so no one would have any thoughts of taking it.

I was at Sportsmans warehouse today looking at Yetis. Nice cooler, but Igloo had a new model out that looked like a better unit. They were called the Igloo Yukon "cold locker". Priced about the same as a Yeti.

Not sure either one is worth $500+

You need to get up towards the 125 qt ones to get to the price you mentioned.  Guess it depends on how big of one your interested in.

I'd be using it on my boat for fish storage. A 20lb King is about 36". I'd have to go at least 155qt (37" inside length) to fit any decent sized salmon without folding them up like a pretzel.

For that use I'd say you don't need one of these heavily insulated coolers.  For the most part you'll be where you can get ice daily or every few days.

Dad has two....doesnt like em. The latches on them are kind of bunk....They tend to keep ice for a bit, far as I can remember hunting elk in e-wa....dont think theyre worth the money, imho.

Not a Yeti but I think these are cool. Practical? Probably not but if money wasn't an object I'd put one in my jeep :chuckle:

Have someone bring a chest freezer and hook it up to a generator, that will keep all game cold during early hunts and they are cheaper!

You need a fish bag then, you can hang some of them over the transom in front of an outboard and or on your swim platform

lots of different ones out there - reliable seems popular but I don't personally have any.
