Popped off a few for fun
« on: August 19, 2012, 10:26:22 PM »
Got my Lee 500S&W mold all prepped and working nicely last week and pumped out a batch of boolits.

Then I figured out how to use the Lyman450. (which I then managed to break)  :'(

and went up to a friends house to fling a few down range, just to rough in the sights. Everything went quite well and it was a lot of fun!

Especially lobbing boolits down-field that I poured, sized and lubed myself8)

info: the boolits are from a double Lee mold. They are 500 S&Ws, 440 grain, made from melted wheel weights. Pushed thru my Knight Bighorn with 80grains of Pyrodex RS and #11 primers.

When I have WAYYYY more free time I will head to a range and actually fine tune for accuracy. This trip was just to get comfortable with a new weapon.

Thanx! :)

I did a ton of reading on how to prep a Lee mold. It helped a lot.

On my first batch, I ended up 'culling' almost 3/4 of them. But that's cool too. Don't like 'em? Just melt 'em back down and pour again!  :chuckle: My 2nd try was much better with probably 80% keepers.

Like anything else, practice makes 'perfect'!  ;)  Pouring was fun too.

I can't say yet how they will group, but I can hit a clay pigeon off-hand at 60yards!  :IBCOOL: Peeled an impressive chunk out of the side of a doug fir too.  :yike:

Even tho not legal for hunting, I want to get a scope on the Bighorn for patterning. That will take the 'old guy eyes' variable out of the accuracy equation!
