Fast help needed. 2nd deer question
« on: August 17, 2012, 11:02:28 AM »
I got drawn for an "Any weapon" 2nd deer tag.  When I asked a couple of months ago, you guys said that my weapon choice for my 2nd tag had to match my weapon choice for my primary tag.  I just logged on to purchase my 2nd deer tag and at the end, I was given this:

That tells me that, even though my primary tag is for archery, my 2nd deer tag can still be modern firearm since it's an "Any weapon" 2nd deer tag.  Am I reading this correctly or do I need to pick archery since that's what my primary tag is?

page 27 of the regs states: the second tag must be the same weapon choice as your first tag.  Kinda sucks eh, esp since your gonna pay a premium price for it.

Yea, just called and got it verified.  Was really hoping to take my kid out and let him shoot the deer as my designated harvester.  Kids can't get enough opportunities to shoot deer IMO.

I know right. They talk big about getting kids into the hunting scene but dont back it up. The youth tag choices are woefully inadequate imop. 10 tags in 568 for mod. i think every kid who goes thru the course and puts in for a tag should get one.

I disagree with some of your post...I think kids should have to apply just like us.  Every kid with a trophy at the end of soccer season is another entitled kid.  I do think that kids should get preference points and have thier own catergory, and once drawn cant draw another, but sometimes they need to be disapointed to be happy.  10:568 are crappy odds, cant argue that, but maybe if it was 50:50 or so.  284 kids for that unit looking for bucks and does, and 284 kids for that unit for bucks only would even it out a little, depending on deer population and success rates for that unit.  I know that my son and daughter will apply for everything they can when they complete hunters ed, but sometimes life lets you down...Thats a valuable lesson that sports and schools dont teach anymore...My post isnt meant to discount your opinion, just give you mine.

Every kid who passes hunter ed can get a tag, just not a special draw tag. Some people think that giving kids a free pass on everything is a good idea, but all it teaches them is to expect everything in life without having to work for it. Some where down the road when things don't go their way the kids who know how life really works will be the ones who are better off.

X2

Plenty of opportunities to tag a deer in this state for youth if you put in a MINIMAL amount of scouting time.

Hiking more than a100 yds from a road is too much for many hunters.

What is a designated harvester?

Disabled hunters are issued a designated harvester card which allows someone else to take the shot for the disabled person.  There are rules like the harvester can't be further than a 1/4 mile from the hunter or something like that.  I am listed as disabled because of a shredded shoulder that limits my bow hunting and a bad heart that limits how hard I can hunt.  I still do hunt archery though.  If my tag would have been for rifle, I could have let my son shoot my deer.  Along with his tag, he would have gotten to shoot 2 deer.  The years he gets a 2nd deer tag, he could shoot 3.  If I got a 2nd deer tag and so did he, assuming I hunted with a rifle and let him take my shots, he could shoot 4 deer in a year.

Next year or maybe the year after, he'll be strong enough to hunt with his bow and I will most likely let him shoot my deer going forward.  I've shot plenty in my life and have plenty more to shoot after he's grown.  Might as well let him get as many as he can as a kid.
