Albacore tuna trip success

Just finished up processing all the fish  We got out on saturday and came back sunday around lunch .....6 of us guys managed to hook about 120 silver bullets and got little over 80 on board  because we had to filet all of them .  Yes we stayed out on the ocean overnight and got to fishing at 6am ,first hookup was at about 6:05 ..... I had a blast and managed to get the biggest albacore tuna in my life = 44 lbs .............. here is a picture that cannot come even close to the real deal -it was a jumbo jet IMHO  ........

Man that is a ton of fish. Is it that common to loose that many fish? Are they soft in the mouth or what causes that? I have never fished for them.

We were only 20 -25 miles out in the blue zone
and to answer the first question : the average fish was 25lbs and we were fishing on light gear (we're talking salmon rods and reels -30 lbs test ) and they would go hide under the boat and rubb the line ,tangle it ,you name it ............ 
and there were sharks around us most of the time - the fish were scared and would dive 200' down in about 5 seconds  :chuckle:then go up again and down again so you would tighten up the drag -that was the biggest problem ........they are just too strong swimmers ,but we had fun,fun,fun

How expierenced are you on the open ocean?

open ocean and rivers  Although my dad on the other hand (who would be coming) used to test boats for Bayliner. He may have some experience  If you ask me how much experience with the open ocean I have, that means we probably shouldn't

Tell me you didn't land all those on rods... That would be an arm burner for sure. A couple is nice, but then I'm all about handlines!

You must have fished out I ilwaco to only be 20-25 miles out.

Tuna do have really soft mouths and flesh, live bait hooks are very small and pull out easy. It's not uncommon to loose quite a few fish.

Yes,we were going out of Ilwaco ..... about 90% fish were caught on light tackle with live anchovies while drifting ,the initial hookups were on trolling line with tuna flies ......and plugs and rapalas ....... I've got few short  videos and will try to post it up on youtube maybe tomorrow or so for you to enjoy as well.....

Sounds like a blast.  We tried to plan a tuna trip this year, but we couldn't get everyone on the same schedule.
