What animals can I expect
« on: August 20, 2012, 11:48:51 PM »
What animals can I expect to reasonably find on Whidbey Island that I can trap?  I know there are coon because I've seen them up there, but what else lives out there? Bobcat, mink, weasel?  On water: Beaver, muskrat, otter?

I know there are a few small lakes that I will have to look into to see if they are private or public, but that doesn't mean I can't start doing my homework to figure out how to make cage sets for both land and water animals.

Skagit county is right next door with plenty of farmland between where I'll live and the Skagit River so I'm sure I'll be able to figure out where I'll be able to trap on the way, but with work during the week, I'd only really be looking to drive off on the weekends.

I'll still be looking forward to a trapping education class after my arrival (9/15), but that doesn't mean I'm not getting withdrawls.

I would say yes to all you have listed plus possum and coyote.  There are fox up on some of the islands, but not sure how many there are on Whidbey.  Outside shot at skunks too.  Add nutria to the mix in Skagit county.
May that for which I prepare never come to pass.

I would think about beaver, otter and rats. Beaver and otter has always been the go to furbearers in Western WA. Coons and mink, sure, but no money there.
Coyotes and fox don't even think about it. It would be an exercise in frustration trying to cage trap them.

Expect to see lots of Opossums, raccoons, Mink, and Otter in, on, or near any water.
Also, nutria and muskrat are possible if you trap ponds and slow water.

Stan Marsh: "My Uncle Jimbo says we gotta get up there early. Right Uncle Jimbo?"

Jimbo: "That's right, Stanley. Animals are much easier to shoot in the morning."
