Hornady Superformance
« on: August 22, 2012, 10:08:51 PM »
Anyone have any experience with the Hornady Superformance ammo? Just ordered a box to try out in the. 280 Rem barrel on my Encore.

I think the case would expand too much after it was shot. I had a hell of a time getting the bolt open after I sent one down range. It was a vanguard .300 win mag.

I'm a bowhunter so I don't know a whole lot about this stuff but I do you shouldn't have to work the bolt that hard.

I used to shoot them out of my 30-06 back when they were called "light magnum", never had any issues with them, accurate and faster than regular loads.
Took a bunch of muleys and one bear with them.

I've only shot them in a .308 gas rifle, Sig 716. Accuracy was acceptable for a 16" gas carbine but I had to pretty much open the gas system on the piston all the way up. Due to the fact they were flat beating the hell out of my bolt carrier group as compared the carbines usual diet of Hornady TAP ammo.

Yeah, Coach. Same barrel.

I shot them today...boresighted and got zero'd with core-loks, then shot the superformance ammo. I purchased the 139 graim GMX's and they shoot good. B.S. on the no increase in felt recoil. This thing kicks like a friggin mule. I think the weight of the rifle isn't helping the recoil. Its a nice liggtweight rifle. I am surprised by the recoil for sure. Man I sound like a Sissy again.

I second that B.S. on the no increased recoil claim.  I've shot a box out of my super light Ruger Mk II in .257 Roberts; they are as accurate as any handload I've tried (I spent a lot of time with this rifle working up loads), they're defidently faster than any of my handloads but have way more recoil.  Not saying that it's too much for me but my wife sure doesn't like them.  I went back to my handloads since she's less timid when she isn't shooting the "red bullets".

I've shot the old 180 grain Light Magnum's out of my Remington model 700 30-06 for years and had great results. MOA groups and usually a pass through on elk. My Savage 116FCSAK 30-06 wont group them well though, had to go to the SST's for a MOA group.

Years of evidence indicates that Hornady's "Light Magnum" / "Super Performance" ammunition does indeed shoot faster that other equivalant factory loads, without an unsafe increase in pressure.

Accuracy is really something that can't be pinned on a specific load: every gun is different, so you need to find out what each individual gun likes.  I've had several rifles that shot Light Magnum ammunition very well, and a few that didn't. I neither praise nor fault ammunition as being inherently "accurate" or "inaccurate".

Recoil: it's been my experience that these loads do in fact recoil a bit more, as physics would suggest.

While target shooting with my 30-06 I had somone else load my rifle with some Light Magnums and some "regular ammo" to see if I could tell the difference shot by shot from the recoil. I could.

Anyone have any experience with the Hornady Superformance ammo? Just ordered a box to try out in the. 280 Rem barrel on my Encore.

I've used them in my 6.5 x55.  They shoot well, but so did the basic 140 grain SP's that Hornady made prior to the SST in that caliber.  The only thing I'm not sure about is the tend to explode and fragment in the deer.  They'll put the deer down, no problems with that...  It's just that I'm not a big fan of ruining a whole bunch of meat, or picking through it looking for pieces of the bullet.   I'm still going to use them, but I was happier with the older SP's (they stopped making them in my caliber).   If I had the choice (with hornady factory ammo) I would give back the FPS for a bullet that mushroomed well and held together after impact.

Steve-
I have a 300 win mag barrel too but its got a Defensive Edge brake on it. Its a kitten compared to the 280. Weird as that may or may not sound.

Miles-
I bought the GMX bullets because they say they will stay together. I think the other ones they say will come apart like that.

Nice. I've been thinking about a brake myself. Our 300 mags hurt. How much was your brake and who did it, Bellem ?

If I remember correctly the brake was $80.00 then install it... I think I paid 160 or 180 all up.

A guy over here did it. I wont recommend him.  I think he's not even in business any more.
Bellm will do it.

I swear by them, used them when they were "light Magnums".  You have to use the right bullet for what you want.

SST = Balisttic Tip = Blows big holes, bullets come apart
GMX = Solid Bullets = complete pass throughs, bullets don't expand very much, need high velocities to mushroom, wont come apart
Interbond = Bonded Bullet = not as much damage as SST's, bigger wound channel than GMX's, mushrooms at lower velocities and stays together.

Taken two elk and several deer with them in .30-06 and .308.  Great round and almost the only thing I use now for hunting.

More kick than a standard round but still very tolerable with a recoil pad.

Josh your a sissy ! the .280 recoil wasn't bad , But that 7mm barrell pounded me . Did you ever do a trigger job on her ? I put a brake on my 6.5x284 along with carrying 13 pounds on her back she feels like a .223. BTW I sold the 338wm I got from you to help fund the project but that was a cool gun and with a 30.378 i just couldn't justify it sittting in my safe .
