Camping In Winthrop wa- should I bring my rifle
« on: August 27, 2012, 11:01:04 AM »
Going camping in Winthrop and have never been there and am thinking about bringing my rifle just in case I happen to see a bear. It's going to be a family camping trip so it's going to be a situation where if we go hiking then I will bring it just in case I see one. I have not bought a deer tag yet but I am thinking about possibly getting one and bringing my bow.

I will have to check the regs to see exactly what is legal to shoot

Coyotes and bear
I'd bring it

I'm thinking I can prob get up really early and do some hunting. I'm going to be bringing my German shorthair so even just chasing some grouse would be fun

I was just over there all week. Saw a few deer, 1 cinnamon brown bear, rattlesnake and a whole lot of country.

It will be weird for me to be in wood that aren't thick with underbrush :chuckle:  I mostly hunt the wet side

A guy I work with shot one over 300 lbs, seriously, no BS, a couple of years ago. They were hunting up past Pearrygin Lake. Good luck

Hell yes. I remember when that area was almost normal years ago, I mean loggers and cattlemen lived there.

The second hunting season after Larry and I married I took him to my favorite hunting spot. We hiked up the hill cause my 7 year old daughter wanted to go" way up there".  Larry came not believing there were deer in the area.  Hiked to the top and watched (september before rifle season) 3 young bucks nap and feed.  They started watching below not concerned about us.  20 minutes later a bear comes up the ridge, the deer move out and it was suggested I run down to get the rifle and climb back up to shoot the bear. Yeah right!  The bear will wait.  I and my daughter did. Grabbed my ruffle and biked back up while Larry watched the bear.( like it would wait for us to shoot it after an hour or more hike down and back up)  It did, played in some brush and fed.  By the time I had hiked back up with my new rifle I hadn't shot anything with yet I decided we couldn't adore a mount two years in a row. Larry didn't agree and asked to shoot it in my place.  He did.  Yes it is mounted, not a big bear but total team work with 6 kids in camp. A great memory and yes you should always take your rifle just in case.  I still can't believe we got that bear.  A fun Labor Day camp out and thus hooked all the kids into hunting.  We came back in Oct and tagged out on two of the three bucks we had seen that day also!
