a lot of these ranches and pay to hunt places in SD or ND are HEAVILY supplemented with pen raised birds. make sure you do your research to determine which outfitters offer only the real thing.

North Dakota has lots of open land available to hunt.  They publish a map book every year under the PLOTS program.  PLOTS stands for Private Lands Open To Sportsmen.  Under the program landowners are paid a couple bucks an acre to enroll in the program and post signage on the corners of the property designating that they are enrolled in the program.
The signs are yellow triangles (pointed down) are easily seen from the road.
I have an outdated copy kicking around here if you'd like.  Most of the properties shown in it will still be in PLOTS but they do renew them every year.

There is plenty of public land available for hunting in SD that produce good birds. I have hunted a pheasant farm in White Lake, but that was years ago. but there are plenty of creditable private hunting operations out there. I usually get access to private land hrough family connections.
