Whats that thing in the Nisqually River

Its above the Tank Crossing bridge 

Saw it today. Runs the width of the river with some contraption on either end going up the bank and on the one side it looks to be like a funnel or separator of some sort. There a steaming pile of compost there and a trailer parked off to the side.

When I first saw the big box i thought fish buyer, but then seen that thing in the river and then I was really stumped. For what i saw, it was about 2 feet wide and ran the width of the river. the water flowed over it like a single step in the water


Any one know what it is 

Seen a few guys fishing below the bridge also. Do they get a lot of salmon up that high? How far up river do the salmon get caught and still be good.

I know I seen plenty of guys last winter steelhead fishing in the cold, with fire burning along the shore line last year.

It's a fish trap.It holds young fish,to be counted.

 :chuckle:What are they counting?  The fish are in the nets. No really what are they counting? Salmon? Trout? And why?

Counting smolts that are headed down river to the ocean.It helps them get a idea of how many will return as adults.

It is against the law to fish above the tank crossing, except catch and release and for two hatchery steelhead.must use 'selective'gear.  Also Alder res. up stream selective gear, 2-14 inch trout then state rules. apply

I haven't fished up by the tank crossing for kings but I'm guessing those fish will be boots just like during the chum run later in the year up there.  It is good though if you don't want to fish in crowds and want to catch some fish.

Apparently up there the trout have been really good fishing.

Its a weir (sp?) they are seperating native and hatchery kings, only allowing native fish to continue on to spawn

You can fish to the right side of the tank crossing chum usually make it up there real heavy but not very many kings or silvers!!
