I like to eat Elk Too!.. Rosie
« on: September 12, 2012, 01:56:34 PM »
This was an intresting year to say the least started off when i had to get shoulder surgery on May 1st and didnt think i was going to be able to pull a bow back but that didnt end up being the case, then while training and getting all prepared for elk season i got bucked off my Mule 4 days before i left for my elk hunt and sprained my Left knee and my right Ankle so i pretty much couldnt catch a break..  So We head off to elk camp and I could barely walk but my knee and ankle would loosen up after putting some miles on, the first couple days were fairly slow worked a couple bulls but couldnt connect.. then on day 4 i got woken up to bulls bugling and cows chirping right at camp so that was an easy decision, "im hunting at camp today".. so i waited at my camp till it got light out and slowly walked around the knob i was camping on and the bull would bugle at every call I would make however he had cows so he would not commit..  I thought to myself FFFF it i am going to make an aggressive move on this FFFER and go right at him, i kept the wind right the whole time and made a slow stalk in and when i knew i was close i screamed in his face and he fired back at me and started wracking a tree about 40 yards away.. I could see the tree moving but i couldnt see the elk.. I thought dam it he is still hung up so i checked my wind and got even closer and had a window i ranged at 40 yards, so i just stood there cause i had a good feeling he was going to walk through that window, so now a cow walks through that window and i was thinking i bet that bull will be right behind her and sure enough he steps out and i chirped at him and he obviously stops and looks at me and at that time an arrow was in the air.... double lunged him went 40 yards and he was deader then a mackrale..... I put 36 miles on my boots in the first 3-4 days and killed this guy 50 yards from my camp... funny how things work out sometimes!.. Moral of the story is elk hunting is a chess game sometimes and you got to be aggressive and make a move when they dont want to come in, wind is everything; sometimes you get busted when your aggressive and sometimes you have a dead bull...  Keep poundin!...  Archie!.. Ya, I got "it" handed to me, for the first time in 20+ years, I could not even FIND an elk ! The best spot was where I sent the friend of mine recovering from heart surgery, he saw Elk, but not me, or my partners...
