Slug help

So i found a piece of land over here to hunt, landowner was really cool said to kill as many as i want, i only can afford tags for one. but the area is in a firearms restriction area and the only modes of hunting allowed (as im sure most you know) are bow, shotgun with slugs and conventional pistol.

so my questions are;

whats a good slug to use ( i know im asking personal preference question here)

whats the effective range of a slug

can i shoot a slug out of a choke tubed barrel and if so what choke if any or....

background info is i will be using a smooth bore (standard factory barreled) 870, it is tubed and i have a modified choke for it
Im hunting whitetails, mainly does unless a bruiser steps out, in a cut alfalfa field with little to no cover, more so on the no cover side, that butts up against a river riparian area that a lot of deer live in they bed less than 20 yards out of the field

oh and ive never shot a true slug before

The Rifled Slugs are hollow, so choke shouldn't matter.  Depending on the gun, they can be amazingly accurate.  Some states, like Massachusetts only allow shotguns for deer season.  You know that you can get a "Slug Barrel" for your 870, with sights and all.  I wouldn't push it much past 100 yards.  But that's just me...

i know i can get a rifled slug barrel but right now money is tight, im in my last year of college and didnt make near what i thought i would over the summer and had to buy a new rig

im trying to do the archery thing but so far everything is hanging out just outside of my bow range, im looking to put meat in the freezer to cut down on the beef bill and i really dont care how i do it, yes bow kills are always cool and impressive but meat is meat so i dont really care what projectile puts in down

Rifled slugs are hollow????Most folks I know prefer an d open choke like "cylinder" for slugs, but a Mod choke should work.
How come you can shoot does? What do you mean "shoot as many as you want"? More than one tag? Are you hunting Washington? or Montana?

Shoot the slugs and find out how far you can hit a 6inch circle.

Also muzzleloader and crossbow. All can have telescopic sights.

Yes, all the Rifled Slugs I know of have a large hollow base so the slug swages as it goes down the bore.  My uncle in Mass. has used his old Winchester Model 12 full choke shotgun with a notch in a bead of solder on the action as a rear sight for years, and that gun shoots slugs like a rifle.  Some shotguns shoot slugs well--and some don't.  His does!  Personally, I have more confidence in my muzzle loader than I do in a shotgun with slugs.

yeah im hunting montana, bozeman area to be a little more precise.  i can hunt whitetail does becuase i bought a whitetail doe tag (non res OTC). im not sure if i can buy more doe tags or not but at $75 a pop one is plenty. the land owner was being a bit fecicous (sp?) with the shoot as many as you want comment he hates deer and expressed his dislike of them rather bluntly. i mainly threw that in there cause im still a bit surprised at how easy he was to deal with, with asking for permission

if you got questions carl i have answers ask away i know how the HW police can get and i can assure you im well with in the regs
