Buying a new gun.

Looking for some advise on getting a new gun. My wife bought me a 300 win and I am not very big worried it is going to pop my sholder out.  But wondering what size I should buy I am not from the pacific northwest originally from Michigan so I have used shotgun before but don't know what you need for black tail looking at 270. I Like the sako just not sure if it is worth it. Thanks for the advise

300 WM will buck ya some.. but a good limbsaver recoil pad will help a lot..

But you have a caliber there that will take deer, elk, bear, cougar, wolf (when it opens up) etc.... 

.308, 7mm*08, .257 roberts, .338 Federal.. on up will all take blacktail...  depends on what you like.. if you are recoil sensitive I would start with a .257 Roberts and then 7mm-08...

I'm a fan of the .308, and maybe I'm old school - but I've shot plenty of deer with plenty of differnt types of ammo, and I always come back to the good old Winchester Super X soft points for closer to mid-ranges in the thick stuff.  Bout $20 a box, and it drops em' just as fast (if not faster) than some of the $60 per box ammo

If you hunted deer with a shotgun you were using buckshot or slugs.

If you can handle that,you can handle a .300 WM.

You certainly don't need a 300wm for blacktail, the .270 would be a fine caliber to move to.

The 270 Win is an excellent caliber for western hunting. One of the best deer calibers
a fellow can use not to mention it's killed plenty of elk too.

270win. will work for all game here in this state. Flat shooting ad accurate enough so when you come over to the eastside and hunt mule deer in the open country. I use a 270wsm here for mule deer on th eastside.  130gr. all the way up to 160gr. will handle anything in this state as long as you place the bullet were it needs to be.

I bet your shotgun kicked as much as the 300. Of course depending on the shotgun load.

Might not be as bad as you think.

If you shoot it and find it is not as bad as you were thinking, then you are set for pretty much anything you would want to go after, up to and including moose.  But, if you don't like it, the .270 is a great choice and really can't go wrong with it or something like it, lots of big and little critters been taken with bigger and smaller cartridges over the decades!   

Maybe try posting some pictures of it in the classified section for sale or trade, lots of folks on here like wheeling & dealing.

Now see...you're looking at this all the worng way...your wife thinks you are man enough for the 300WM so she hooked you up...Now what you need to convince her of is that a nice 270WSM or 270 would be a great addition since you want to "save as much meat as possible" by shooting a slightly smaller bullet because Blacktails out here on the westcoast are nowhere near as large as a nice Michigan Whitetail.

Now that is the proper attitude!  I would opt for a .243 for a greater spread and more holes to fill in later.  And by the way some great slug guns are out there to get back to your roots.

Keep the 300 get a limb saver (installed or do it your self) and shoot the lighter 150 gr round nose loads for the dog sized black tails they work just fine. The recoil pad wil tame the rifle for heavier loads. Then practice so you can properly place your round on your target. Used this combo all over the west coast with now wounded animals and minimal meat damage.

There are others out there. 

I shot a friends 338 Win mag and it felt like a .308win and I am very recoil sensitive due to lower back injury.

Spend $200 to $250 and put a muzzlebrake on it. Then you can hunt anything in North America with the same rifle. I wouldnt down grade to a 270 or 308, because the muzzlebrake will make it shoot like a 25-06.

I used to own a gunshop and range.  I spent alot of time behind many different guns and the one I hated to sight in was my wifes Rem 700 ADL in 270 Win. that gun hurt me more than any others.  My personal weapons included a Ruger #1 in 300 Win Mag and a Custom Springfield in 358 Norma Mag and both those were *censored*cats compared to the 270.  Stock shape and a good pad will make alot of difference.

Actual felt recoil is all about gun fit...

If a gun fits you right, felt or perceived recoil is less, than in a gun that does not fit you well. 

Case in point:

My uncle had 2 Rem. 760 pumps on 30-06, identical in every way.  One you could shoot all day, no issue.  The other kicked the living snot out of you.  The one that kicked the snot out of you, had actually been modified by someone that DID NOT know what they were doing, and it affected how the gun sat in the crease of your shoulder, and also affected the angle of your head to see through the scope.. almost imperceptible adjustments had to be made... but it was enough that you did not want to shoot that gun more than a couple of times...   

Guys want magnums, then complain about the flinching and how much it hurts to shoot... if YOU GET A GUN THAT FITS, unless you are shooting an elephant gun, there is really no need for a muzzle brake to reduce felt recoil....  My .338 wm fits me to a tee... I can shoot 20 - 30 rounds off a bench no problem.  No flinching, no nothing... oh, and NO muzzle brake...

Do not get a Sako! I know a few seasoned rifle guys and they couldn'tt get there's to group at all.  Maybe just bad barrels from the factory, but for the price it's not worth it to find out. Get a savage!

Thank you all for the advice. I went and got a Ruger American in 270 didn't want to spend that much. I figure if I have that and the 300 then I am pretty set for rifles in bolt action. now to convince her for a lever action and an AR. Thanks again.
