Silvers gone zipper lipped again
« on: September 26, 2012, 03:09:56 PM »
So who else gets frustrated when the water is low and clear, and the coho won't bite a damn thing! I've been catching a few here and there but all have been up river on the Skagit and in the deep pockets of water. In the lower river everyone I talk to is frustrated and not catching them. Dick nites, vibrex spinners, eggs, jigs I've thrown it all, Anybody have any tips on what to use when its like this, other than wait for rain?? lol

The last week or two have been better than average out on the sound.

gonna chime in on this one... Skagit silvers in particular are very aggresive.  When the water gets low and fish are mid river and jumping all over, I search for "biters" I use a technique (like throwing a spinner) or something that gets a lot of attention and has a large attraction radius (I know this goes against logic in low clear water, often times we severely outfish the best stealth dick nite guys).  keep the boat moving, don't anchor up make a pass or two through a run and keep moving, if fish are rolling maybe 3 passes tops.  The idea is to cover a lot or water, I haven't been out this year to due bear hunting fever, but most years am out several times a week after work.  We have frustrated many dick niters sometimes hitting multiple fish in a pass, rest the fish come back an hour later and do it again.  A typical evening would be 4 to 10 hook-ups sometimes more.
..........or just wait until the rain and they will be much easier to catch. (Jig twitching is lethal) good luck!

this pic was from 3 hours of fishing on an evening in late September when 'they weren't biting'

Nice work. Never thrown spinners for silvers. Which ones do you like? I plan on pulling plugs and throwing dick nites on the snohomish the next couple weeks, but I'm always looking for more tools in the arsenal.

I haven't done the snoho a bunch, but that river you pretty much have to anchor on the fish so dick nites was what worked best there, Rvrfisher, vibrax  spinners work, my best spinner was a squid bodied design I came up with a few years ago, very similar to a flying c.  Don't be afraid to hang some K-15 sardine wrapped quickies off the boat either, another deadly method even in clearer water.

Skagitsteel I am speechless...This year has been a nightmere for me ..I always catch as many silvers as I want but it has not happen for me at all ..But again I usaully do not start fishing silvers until mid october but the fish are thick ...what I have seen being most productive for the boat fishermen is a Green orange belly Wiggle wart ...I watch a boat get 2 limits in about 2 hours trolling threw the fish jumping ...hopefully it rains to turn it around for me anyway ....Nice catch ! @ Elkacholic123 Thats a nice silver and one hell of a nice pad you have there  Looks like you know how to hunt ...very nice
