How will the fires affect upland bird hunting
« on: September 23, 2012, 05:30:13 PM »
Just wondering if anyone had thoughts on how the wildfires out east will affect the Chuckar/quail hunting in Yakima and kittitas counties?

The upland hunting has been decimated.  Apparently the little buggers can't tolerate smoke at all.  It breaks my heart to tell you, but I wouldn't waste my time if I were you.  I'm planning on heading over to Seattle on the opener to catch some theatre and maybe get some good sushi.  Maybe next year things will pick up.

For what it is worth, one of the State biologists told me today that smoke will not harm chukar nor quail.  In his words, "these are not canarys in a coal mine".

The quail around my house are all hacking and coughing.  Lots with legs up.

we have seen tons of hawks on the ground for the last few weeks......birds that normally are soaring are sitting on fenceposts and pastureland ....birds are highly sensitive to things like airborne toxins ...quail being ground dwellers are lower risk plus they tend to inhabit places like city parks, university campuses and towns :) so more concentrated where people live and where there is less intense smoke.... for instance my backyard herd of about 14-16 are doing fine :chuckle:
