Need a item list to get started!
« on: September 28, 2012, 11:09:04 AM »
I am purchasing a traditions evolution Monday.  It is set up with #11 caps  and I want to know what accessories you would recommend that are necessary to load, clean, and hunt with a muzzy.

The gentleman said he is getting the best grouping with 90 grains of fff goex and 370 grain maxi balls.  I plan on using this load since I want to get hunting ASAP, but I am wondering about switching to pyrodex and switching away from actual black powder.  What should I look out for when making the switch?

Thanks for your help!

I have this same gun. I use musket caps, 100 grains of pyrodex with 290 grain barnes spit-fire tmz sabots. Seem to work pretty well. 1.5 inch group at 100 yards. Have't spent a lot of time messing with different grains of powder or bullets. The group im getting works for me. You could be different

Some things you might find usefull:

Ball starter
Nipple dispenser
Nipple cleaner (I use an acetylene torch tip cleaner, it's cheap and works)
Extra nipples
Speed loaders
A good powder measure (preferably 5 grain increments or less)
Cleaning jag that fits the threads on your ramrod
If you must use a brush to clean (not always necessary); again make sure the threads allow you to attach to your ramrod. This saves you from packing an entire cleaning kit with you.

I'm sure I missed something. Seems like I pack way too much crap around when muzzy hunting.  :chuckle:

you MAY have missed something but you seem to have gotten plenty of items with the words nipple / ball / load / and ramrod in them

I have the same gun and use 100 gr of fffg and 300 gr Hornady SST's and am getting under 1/2" groups at 100 yds.  Like said before, good cleaning supplies, speed loaders, etc.

Ok this may seem dumb, how do you decide how much powder to throw behind the bullet?  I reload for rifles and it's all in the book and all in grains. Is there a speer book for muzzys?

Since you reload ,use your scale to weigh your powder.Find your best groups by volume. Then weigh it and make several speed loads  and go shoot them you will be suprised at your groups, since I did this, my groups tighten up from softballs to almost touching holes. Powder settles different every time you pour by volume, its hard to get consistant loads. If you fill up your powder measurer and give it serval good taps on it and watch how much it settels. Hope this helps you get nice groups! Good luck
