First muzzleloader malunction
« on: October 01, 2012, 06:15:01 AM »
Got a late start Saturday morning, about 9:30, But this is my youngest boys first year to tag along with dad and he was real excited. Ended up walking up on two leagal bucks in the crp. We got down and waited for them to stand. Even tried some whistling to get them up. They would look but not stand. Apperently the wind swiriled, because in two seconds they were up and gone. Sunday we managed to walk up to two big bucks in the middle of the stubble, I don't know how they did not see us, but we ended up 30 yards from them. With gun in hand I did more glassing to make sure I wanted to shoot, finially one buck noticed the movement and picked his head up. I knew it was about to get exciting so I slid the binos down and brought my gun fully up. The buck slowly stood and looked at us. I squeezed the trigger and click, I recocked and clicked, I tried screwing out the second safety, but it already was, click. The first buck takes off and the second, larger buck stands. I figured what the heck, pulled the trigger and click! Lesson learned, Look at you caps before loading them, and keep your capper anound your neck.

What was wrong with your caps? Are you shooting a CVA?

Are you using German made musket caps?
If you love something you will set it free, if it don't come home, hunt it down and kill it.

Had the cap fallen off the post?  And then of course the next question was the hammer contacting the cap?
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

The cap was stuck on the nipple good, and it had the heck pounded out of it. I've noticed with these caps before that sometimes the primer coumpound comes loose from the cap. I'm assuming this is what happened, but did not take the time to look as I recapped and took off running after the bucks. I just got back into town after since Monday , and I will shoot it tomarrow.

I had the same thing happen to me when I went target shooting a few weeks ago. I was going to shoot 3 or 4 primers off to burn off any oil residue but the caps wouldn't fire, the powder would dislodge and disintegrate and the cap was extremely difficult to remove. I was using caps that were in my capper from last year and even though I had stored it in my dry box I figured mosture must have gotten to them so I opened a fresh tin and problem solved.
BOOM ...That's funny ....BOOM !

That problem happened to my buddy last year. Had a buck at 40 Yards click.. nothing. It ended up ok cause i ended up killing the deer. But after we went to the range and same problem, trying all different caps and it would rarely go off. Decided to change the nipple and ever sense his gun has been perfect. Nipple's wear out gatta replace em!

It's a lot like a malfunction.
