Tacoma... Lift??
« on: October 02, 2012, 07:07:56 PM »
just curious who has a lifted tacoma, new body style.

I've thought about doing it to my 2011 but I don't really know if I want to sacrifice ride, mileage, excess wear, etc.

I haven't looked at many options but I'm thinking if I do it it would be minimal, maybe enough to run 285/75/16's. I've heard there's a TSB that puts a 4 pack of springs under the rear rather than 3 and you can add different Bilstein adjustable shocks in the front and get about 2".

Truck is a double cab, 4.0 with 6sp manual. It's plenty powerful now but I'm worried what the tires might do to the power and mileage.

Any input from those who have one? what happened to your ride, power, mileage?

I had a 2008 Toyota Tacoma 4X4 crewcab automatic, V6

I put a 4 inch lift from Les Schwab it was 465 dollars out the door.

I put 33 inch KM2 tires on the truck

I got stuck 3 times and all three were in the snow with the stock setup.  I have never been stuck since.

It dropped the gas milage but I was never stuck again and that was worth. You do loose a little power but nothing too horrable.

My son took it over to WSU.  So it is gone!!!

I still have my '01 Tacoma, but got rid of an '07 that had a 3" with 32 Toyos last fall. I hated to drive it. Loud, rough, and it was a complete squirrel on the road. I would pull my 18' glass bass boat with my 4banger rather than drag it behind that '07. No more lifts for us, serves us no purpose and haven't been happy with the results. Just my :twocents:

I have an 98' ext cab with no lift, 32/11.5 BFG's and the 2.7L,   it gets my vote for the best all around hunting rig ever! 260k and runs like it did on day one without leaking a drop of anything!

Maybe I need to drive a newer, lifted double cab. Maybe I'll just throw some 265/75/16 mud terrains on and call it good.

I have an 05' with the 4.0 liter V6.  I have a 6" Fabtech lift, with 35x12.50x20 Toyo MT's with KMC XD795 Hoss wheels with a -12mm offset.  I've also added a custom dual exhaust, and an intake to the truck.  Never changed the gearing after the lift and bigger tires and it still has plenty of power to be honest.  Obviously a little decrease in the intial snap that the Tacoma's have, but still plenty to push those tires.  You'll notice a significant difference in breaking performance though as the Tacoma just doesn't have big rotors.

I get about 15 mpg on the freeway and 12-13 mpg in town.  To clear 35's you'll have to shave the front part of your frame on the back of the fenderwell otherwise it will rub pretty good if turning and going over any sort of bump or curb.  My first set of 35's got several nice chunks out of the lugs before I realized I hadn't shaved enough and after running around on some logging roads...  :bash:  Got that all taken care of now though and it's been a great truck and honestly goes anywhere you want it!  Drove around in over a foot of snow last year with no chains and you honestly would have thought you were on dry ground.  I'm debating about trading it in for a 2011 or newer double cab and doing the same lift and keeping my wheels and tires to put on it.  These Tacoma's are great trucks hands down!

I have a 97 Tacoma with no lift and have 31 in tires that have taken me everywhere I have needed to go and then some.

Spend the money on getting a selectable locker in the rear of your truck would be my opinion.
The extra cost of tire, gas and wear and tear are not worth the lift. Guess it depends on how much time you will actually spend off road with the truck

what did your fuel mileage do?

I'd also stick with stock rims or aftermarket that are a little wider but no taller, I'd be doing it for capability reasons so I need sidewall :)

:yeah: I have the same truck. I am currently running the 265x70R17 I noticed little  to no change in fuel mileage over stock.... 16mpg daily to 18 or a little better straight highway. I second sticking with stock wheels... I bought aftermarket wheels  :bash:. And wish I had stuck with stock. My bro has the same pickup and is running 265 stock ( no lift ), no clearance issue.  I am sure with a small lift you would clear what you are looking at without any trouble.

The stock wheels look great and only a tiny bit of rub when you turn full.
fuel doesnt change enough to notice.
great mod to this great truck.
ill run mine till it falls apart.

Personally, I'd throw on the 265/75/16 mud terrains and call it good.  I've owned a bunch of Toyota's over the years, and feel a small lift with this size tire is hard to beat. :twocents:

235/85/16 Fierce Tires - no rub due to narrower tire.  Still 31.73 inch tall by 9.25 inches wide.  vs 265/75/16 which is 31.65 inches tall by 10.4 wide.

better gas mileage due to less wind resistance and road resistance from the narrower tire.  I am really happy with this tire size on my F150.

33k miles with 40% tread left.  Best tires I have had on this truck in 4 sets of tires.

Wouldn't argue with that choice either.
