My dad and I picked up our new tent for our special draw Oregon elk hunt this November. We researched pretty well and decided the Cabelas Big Horn III would suit our needs best. We set it up for the first time today after getting it last Thursday. It ended up being a fair deal, Cabelas was offering a $150 gift card with every purchase over $500. They also had a promotion going by offering two cots with purchase of certain tents including the BH-III. They are pretty nice aluminum frame cots too that were valued at $69 bucks each. Anyway, now we are in search of material to fab up our own stove for the tent. We have most of the material and are capable welders, but are having trouble finding a light gauge 12" pipe for the main part of the stove. Soooo, if any of you have any ideas, or know the whereabouts on where to find material for the stove body (prefer round stock but open to ideas) please let me know!! Thanks

You need 6" pipe at most for good draw/vacuum for a woodstove for a tent that size. 12" is too much volume!

I was looking for the 12" diameter for the stove box not the chimney pipe

I would buy that one .
Some places like Sportman Warehouse used to sell a kit that you could make a stove out of a small barrel. They worked good.

Actually that stove as is costs $219. I can build a better stove for less thats "if" I can find the right material.

I'll have to check that out. All the local steel and pipe yards I have been calling only carry real heavy walled tubing and pipe. Thanks!

I used a stove just like that on a wilderness hunt a couple years ago. Worked awesom. My buddy was going to actually build a couple and was having the same trouble. I think they are haveing a sheeetmetal guy in Olympia roll some metal for them for cheap.

That was my next step if I couldn't find any stock pipe was to check US Sheet Metal in Tacoma and see what kind of deal they could make me. If you happen to stumble upon the name of that place in Oly, that would be great too.

I have the bigger version of the stove shown by cylinder stoves and it works great, its air tight and coals still in the morning. If it dont work out building one, Id recommend that stove there!

I wouldnt say he is going cheap, just going to build a stove that will probably hold up better than the cheaply built store bought stove. At least that is what my buddie is thinking. And if you have skills to do so have at'er! I know there are improvements that cacn be made. But on the other hand if your not building it to make improvements and to just save a buck, $200.00 isnt a bad price

MS, I just went through the same thing, I had the bighorn and just returned it to buy the Alagnak. Got the $150 giftcard and the free cots, good deal!! I'm in the process of looking for a stove also. I can build one but for the price I figured I would buy one, probably the one pictured. I buy metal for work and I'll bet you will have at least $80 in steel alone. Thats not counting the hardware.
I have been kicking around buying a propane stove but I'm concerned about condensation

What ever you do post pics, I might steal your idea

Propane is a "wet" heat, it would be warm but wouldnt dry out clothes as easy. I ran into that problem heating my Taxidermy shop. I couldnt figure out why my salted hides wouldnt dry

You can build a bad ass wall tent stove out of old steel car rims. Wont burn out the bottom either. If your not packing with stock and just setting up near a trail head, look in the classifieds and sometimes you can find stoves that are not approved for mobile homes. They work real well.

I have the same stove that you have pictured. The stove is awesome and I would say buy the friggin thing. I mean only 200 and all of your time involved finding the material and making it would justify in just spending the money on a good stove.

I just dumpster dived in our company scrap metal bin, but couldn't find any big dimension pipe. I can get a pass for scrap for free. Would a 30 gallon clean grease barrel work, I might be able to get you one. They are about 14" in diameter and 30" long made like a 55 gallon drum but of course smaller.

Are you planning on splitting the pipe lengthwise, opening it up and welding a flat top to it. That's how mine is made. If your not in a big hurry I might be able to scrounge up something but it might take me a couple of weeks. A friend of mine owns a metal fab company and he'll let me scrounge threw his scrap pile.

I don't know where fox island is, I'm a wetsider over here is Kelso, if your interested I can try and get some steel and you could look at my stove. I might even be able to get stainless. Let me know.

Its not really about the money... I look at these stoves at Cabelas and they are nice and all, but if you weld for a hobby or weld professionally, you look at them and kinda go, huh. I am looking to build one for nostalgic affect as well as function and uniqueness. Since most stories are told around a fire, I think a story about how this old stove came to be would be a good one that would be told for a number of years. If I'm not able to come up with material that I am comfortable with or unsafe, I'll most likely buy a stove. Especially since November is right around the corner. Thanks for all the input guys!

That grease barrel is almost the perfect dimension! I'm not sure where Kelso is

but Fox Island is basically Gig Harbor only twenty minutes from Tacoma. If you have an opportunity to get one that would be great. I am going to call a sheet metal place tomorrow, that might be the easiest route for me right now. I will let you know tomorrow night for sure, I might take you up on that offer.

I just looked at the map. I appreciate your offer, but I'm sure what the sheet metal place will charge me will be less than the cost of diesel to drive down

I have the same tent, but also got the vestibule, and the picuted cylinder stove as well. Its a great set up. I was going to build the stove but opted out.

Nostalgia and grand stories don't keep you warm in the middle of a NE Oregon snow storm! If you plan on using this setup alot I think the tent should be built around a great stove. The Cylinder stove is just that, I have the Outfitter and it will hold a fire for a good 6-8 hours when loaded and dampered down, it keeps my 12x15 Bravo tent real comfortable. If you do get the Cylinder stove don't bother with the side water tank, its a waste of time and money.
Depending on the size of your tent you may get away with the Hunter the next size down from the Outfitter. If you want to talk to a certified professional call John at Bravo Mfg. he can answer any questions you may have about those stoves. He is on the web as well, bravomfg.com.

I run a heavy equipment attachment shop here in Arlington, WA. I could build something like this rather quickly. We have a CNC plasma cutter, roll form, and plenty of welding machines. If we can decide on a size, I could produce multiples quick. If they were to be square, I could build them faster.

That is a great tent, my hunting partner has one and I have spent more nights than I can count in it, from spring turkey with steady rains to late fall with 18" of snow and 0 degree temperatures. You will like the tent very much, I would suggest getting the vestibule as it add a lot of space for storage that is dry. Also, I personally would just buy the stove, they work very well, and last well.

I did not see mention of a jack for the pipe where it goes through the tent wall.
I put sand at the bottom of the stove box so the heat would not damage the bottom of the stove.
Set the stove up in your back yard along with the chimney and fire it up. That will burn off all
of the coatings and break in the box. If you do it in hunting camp, that smell can be strong and will get into your clothing.

I have two tents that I set up for my camp, one is a Bighorn III just like you have and the other is a Montana Wall tent. I use the Cylinder Stoves (that you have pictured) in both tents. You can get by cheaper - if you're packing you can get by lighter - but if you go with that stove you will not be disappointed. It comes standard with a side tray and you can also get the hot water tank.

Its a small project compared to what we normally do.

Thanks for all the input, advice and offers everyone has contributed to me. I actually acquired all the materials (except stove pipe) and built the stove today. I'm thrilled how it came out. I had a nice fire in it this evening. Tomorrow I hope to finish a couple of details and get it painted. When it is all done I will post some pics along with all the details of the build.

try the old stlye propane tanks 7 1/2 gal size made a perfect size, i built three last month. they look just like the stoves you are looking at, i got the tanks for free and about $50 into it the biggest proplem was getting the right size for the stove pipe to fit on, it took about 2 to 3 days messing around to put it to gether, not real hard, if you want i'll see ir i can get you some pics, they hold the heat real good ( run you right out the tent ) the tent i use my in is a 12x 14 montana tent.

I ended up using a propane tank for the stove body. It came out real well. I posted pictures of it under general discussion.

I know those round stoves are popular now, but I have the old rectangular kind and I hang a hot water tank on the side. I don't like to bath in cold water nor wash my hands and face in cold water. I also do not need to heat the water on top of the stove as it is always hot as long at the fire is burning. My hot water tank hold about 4 gallons. It has a nice spigot. Plenty for most chores.
