Full moon question
« on: October 11, 2012, 05:46:39 PM »
Hey all, how do you think the moon phases affect calling predators in the day time? I do mean all predators, coyotes, lions, etc. any thoughts?

There was an article in Predator Xtreme Magazine about a year ago on this very thing.  The author did a study and found that predator hunting was best when the moon was fullest, and amazingly it was found that the best time to hunt was in the hour before moonrise, and in the hour after moonset.  There are tables to tell when this occurs.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

Thanks for the info. I've often wondered how the moon affects predators. Hopefully I'm gonna give those times a try at the end of the month. Thanks again

It's been my experience that coyotes are the least active during a full moon. Day and night calling.

I read that article and had to do a double take , I have been calling coyotes for quite a few years now and ill flat tell you when there is a full moon they are not as active in the daylight hours. Not saying you cant call one up but the percentage of called in coyotes per stand goes way down . maybe in another part of the country this does not hold true( I doubt it makes and diff.)
Think about it a full moon allows them to see and hunt much more sucessfully , They party all night and when dawn comes they go bed down with full bellies .
I dont even waist my time on full moon days unless i HAVE to .
Most coyotes i have called in on a full moon seem to respond best slightly before or after noon , So if your gonna call on a big moon might just as well sleep in a little . jerry

The only sure thing I know about coyotes is that if it's foggy, don't waste your time!  That seems to go for all critters, too.

Mabey the article writer want to keep all the dogs for himself.  :chuckle: Send everyone else out when they won't be very active. As far as fog goes, just play the wind and bring your shotgun.
