Here is a pic of the bullet that took him out. Actually I am not sure if this is the first or second shot. One shot went through his lungs which was my second shot I believe. The first shot he was slightly quartering away looking back at me, I aimed torwards the back of his lungs, the bullet entered and went through to his front shoulder stopping in the hide by his armpit. All of that to say I wasn't really impressed with this round on deer. Don't get me wrong it did the job, but with no real wound channel I didn't have any blood/hair or anything to track. He didn't bleed for about fifty yards down the ridge and actually acted like I had missed him other than heading down the ridge. The deer basically did not have any lungs left and when he started bleeding on the ground he bled a lot, but I think most of it was coming out of his mouth. The bullet is a .300 win mag 180 grain federal trophy tip and this deer took two and kept on scooting. The shots were from about 200 yards, and he went about a hundred yards down and around the hill before he died. Have you guys heard of problems with these bullets expanding in deer? I usually use fusion for deer and trophy tip for elk. Haven't noticed anything weird with spike elk and had some extra so I thought I would use them for deer also. Maybe I am being to critical, but I figured since the cheap stuff always worked good that the more expensive would be better Anyway heading out in the morning for my bull elk hunt hope the trophy tips get the job done.
Heck of a buck to have to "settle" for. This weather is going to fire them early I figured. Sounds like it might be happening. I have one more hell week until I get to really get at them with the camera.
