Last day eastside muzzy elk
« on: October 22, 2012, 09:31:27 PM »
Friday after eating some lunch I decided to spend the rest of the day on a stand. So I packed a book and my reading glasses in my pack (never taken my glasses before)
I found a place to set down looked at my phone, 2:30. Sometime after 5 I feel the ground rumble and hear the sound of running elk. I set my book down and take off my reading glasses and look for the elk. I see a cloud of dust about 30 yds to my right at the timber but no elk. I look everywhere but no elk. Now I am thinking that somehow they busted me. I had been checking the wind about every 15 minutes so figured they must have saw me setting there. Then I catch movement below me and see a cow and a calf playing in the water hole that I had ranged at 100 yds. They must have come out of the timber and beelined for the hole. The calf was playing in the water like a puppy prancing around splashing water. I was really enjoying watching them when out stepped older brother. I have to admit I still don't always understand this hunting thing, I felt happy yet a bit sad at the same time. By the way, did some elk burgers and backstrap on the grill the other day. Man thats some good eatin right there. Now its comming back to me.

I use a .452 300 grain deep curl and mmp-24 sabot with 110 grains of triple7 3fg powder out of a 50cal Knight Disc Extreme. I had preranged the water hole at 100 yds. and he walked out straight ahead of me and stopped. I waited for about 30 seconds for him to turn and he finally turned to give me a nice quarter shot. I aimed right behind his shoulder and he hit the ground right there. It was one of those hunts you always daydream about while sitting on a stand but that seldom if ever materialize.
