After hauling around my wifes Nikon DSLR and worrying I was going to smash it or fall in a river I decided to buy something just for backpacking and it's much lighter and smaller.  I picked up the Panasonic Lumix TS4 waterproof camera and so far I really like it.

Panasonic just made it much easier and cheaper to repair/replace if there are issues as well.

There are lots of water/shock proof, small digitals that take great photos. I had a Pentax Optio for almost 8 years before it finally bit the dust, (my fault) and just bought a Fuji film camera with 12mp that takes amazing photos and has more options then I could ever use. No problem finding a decent one under $200. Olympus has their Stylus Tough cameras as well, they are good from what I hear.
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.

that is pretty much my need as well, thanks for the rockslide tip..ive been looking at the leicas but that's creeping in on a lot of money for an electronic item..i picked up the fuji water proof camera two years ago an it didnt work out,not enough zoom, quality of pics not what im going for,no video, other options were kinda lacking also

Every couple years I usually pick up the newest nicest compact Canon point and shoot.  Can't really complain, except using the zoom to get out for wildlife pics.  They aren't worth a crap, and the Sony compacts are much nicer in that aspect.  They work well for digiscoping though.

A little more than a point and shoot but the Sony NEX series is awesome. Light and compact with the quality image of a DSLR

Looks good. Few questions from a newb. Are the lense connections compatible with others or are they a one off deal from Sony? Digiscoping capabilities?

EDIT: One more question...Does this camera have a threaded receiver for a tripod? I would assume so, but everytime I make an assumption it turns out wrong.  :chuckle:

Point and shoot I have a Fuji XP waterproof etc camera.  Wouldnt recommend it.  It's auto function always screws up and i don't have much luck with through my spotter.
Video, Sony MC50U.  Just started using it this year. So far so good.
Well, I didn't drive 13 hours just to shoot once!

I was hoping that there'd be more discussion on this topic.
I guess we might need to clarify the use of the camera. Scenery? Zoom-in shots of game animals far away? Optical zoom? Digital zoom?
I've just been using my phone for a camera.

basicaly im wanting the perfect all around camera..im thinking a point an shoot with lots of options,i dont wana pack a pro grade camera

i take scenery, lots of zoom pics/vids of animal, random up close shots, also a timer is a must have..i try an take as many pics as i can

digital zoom isnt my favorite but its def nice to have when trying to size up an animal that 2 days away, some of my most fav pics i only got cuz of digital zoom

also i take alot of pics through a spotting scope aswell
