Wish I was more help with Dayton, Rick.  I can tell you there are some great canyons in the Huckleberry Range though!  Might be just the ticket, though I understand really wanting to hunt a specific area.

Yep, cougars are open.  HAve not seen any since the season opened but saw two about two weeks before the season.  They did not have a care in the world.  Just sat on their haunches and stared at me.

rick...i've seen rattlesnakes down on the tucannon river, and i would assume there might be a couple in the dayton area too. i don't think i would lose a lot of sleep over them, but if you have the boots, wear them...why not. down on the tucannon is a lot of burns from the school fire a few years ago...it's pretty opened up. i haven't spent much time in the dayton unit and none in the blue creek...
this pic is from the tucannon unit.

Teach me to call & I'll teach you the Blues.

I was planning on going after a really cool muli-phase bear that I saw this Spring with her two large, ready to be on their own, almost WHITE, cubs. My boy and I spent an hour watching her knock the cubs around and bite at them...she was ready to mate and wanted them gone. I had a spring tag but opted not to shoot due to the amount of fun she provided and I just couldn't see breaking up the family unit in front of my Son. We had a great time that day and saw 9 bears total. Unfortunately due to work that was the only day I got to hunt.

I'm sure she's still there in that canyon and I know there are several others that live within a few hundred yards of there.

Let me know & I'll set aside some time to meet you somewhere. I'm in the Tri-Cities.

Rick,

Give Lick Creek (175) a try. Take the mountain road out of Pomeroy. Theres camping spots all over down there.  And its beutiful country too. There will be a few bow hunters out though. Also a fair amount of Fat, lazy natives driving around too.

It's big country so getting away from the other people is not too difficult. I hope to get down there sometime in Sept and try out those calls from you again.

unit 162. Bears on plums right now, not touching apples. Seems cougars are after calf black angus ( per the rancher I spoke to). Lots of good bucks, hunter numbers are down....good news, burn coming back, bad news, more posting then ever. Report fro, 9/1/08 in the field.

Rattlesnakes ...yesssssss!!! Huge ones.  Damned things.  Sorry I didn't see this thread sooner.  Ticks haven't been bad this year.  Mosquitos not too bad either.  Dogs haven't had even one tick on 'em.  I usually am picking constantly.  We had snow on June 10th so I think it killed off alot of the ticks we would have had.

Where did you end up going for bear?
